Good sci-fi: Babylon 5, ST: TNG, Jeremiah
Bad sci-fi: Firefly, BSG, any ST after DS9

Haven't seen much of Farscape but from what i've heard its more action-adventure than sci-fi

Yeah, probably a bit harsh - it's not bad. I guess my point is it's not really sci-fi. I mean, where's the science? From what I remember it's mostly about the crew's inflated egos (ALL of them), extended space battles (which get repetitive) and sex/romance all of which it otherwise handles quite well.

BSG is possibly the most un-repetitive TV show in a long long long long time.

You really have to watch episode 1 - through - now to get the full 'shaaaazbot, that was fracking gnarly' of it all.

I'm not getting into that discussion again, but I have a feeling most people (not necessarily on this forum) prefer the OT for reasons that are completely un-related to the quality of the films.

Personally, I think most of the flaws that people see in the PT wouldn't exist if they understood the context of the time within the galaxy. People try to dissect these new films without examining any of the elements of society, spirituality and politics within the time. The PT films are essentially made for hardcore fanboys and if you don't understand a lot of the outside story that is essential to their viewing, you're just not going to get it. People try to examine each prequel as an individual film, when they're each installments in a MUCH larger picture. Most I've talked to that hated TPM, now enjoy it because ROTS helped them understand a lot of things that stood out at the time. ANH was a one-off style film, TPM wasn't. You can't judge it the same way.

Also, trying to hold the prequels to the standard set by the originals makes no sense. The originals are all about good vs. evil, black and white. They're character-based campy films full of one-liners. They focus on a trio of heroes romping through the galaxy and they're very personal films. The Prequels are about an entire galaxy. They're about philosophy, religion, politics, etc. They're all about grey matter. They examine the root of good and evil and blur the line. They show the manipluation of a democratic government into a genocidal empire, all done through legal method. The prequels get down into the root of very abstract, off the beaten path ideas. They ARE very different, they were meant to be, and it's when people expected Luke, Han and Leia pt. 2 that they were disappointed.

The films are hardly even scratching the surface when it comes to Star Wars for me, so either way it's hardly a big deal. I prefer the prequels for their massive scope and complex dealings. The OT is fun, sometimes it's dark, but it's really only scratching the surface of what Star Wars is and could be. I've had hours upon hours of insightful discussion with folks born out of questions raised by the prequels. I was never a die-hard EU loving freak until the prequels and especially ROTS convinced me. I love all the films, but the OT is hardly fulfilling to my needs. It just depends on what you come looking for when you watch Star Wars and the new films have what I need.

I read countless novels/comics, I have had countless discussions, I've dissected every angle of every film that I can, and yet everyday I discover something I hadn't thought about before. Star Wars IS that complex, you just have to search for it. I've written short stories and engaged in the community in many ways. Bottom line, the entire timeframe is abundant with good stories and the OT timeline is great. The films just weren't executed up to the level of the new ones for me, but that's to be expected. Lucas has improved a million-fold as a storywriter and filmmaker and that progression has been seen in the subtle nuance that infects every corner of the new films.

In the end though, the EU is what Star Wars is really all about. The stories that come out of the fans, the authors. The unlimited possibilities of a universe. Every species, every world, every struggle. The films only make up a minute section of that. The OT storyline is great, if you're reading the "My Brother, My Enemy" series of comics, then a thumbs up to you. If you love Crimson Empire then a thumbs up to you. But personally, I'm tired of people whoring themselves to the OT films because that's the cool thing to do, in any community. Examine the new films for what they are and quit whining about what you thought they would be. You'd be surprised what you find with an open mind.

The comics are fucking brilliant. Especially the Republic series and now Legacy looks great. It's a perfect medium for Star Wars. As cool as the novels are, a lot of personal character traits are lost when we can't see that certain expression or posture, or glint in the eye. Star Wars is very visual and because the comics can cover every timeline in such a short space, they're probably my favorite Star Wars medium.

Fuckin' A. Vos is a brilliantly crafted character. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of his character. I heard the Lucas personally wants him left alive for possible use in the upcoming television series. Just a rumor, but wow, that would be awesome.

Legacy has been GREAT so far and I'm really enjoying watching where it goes because I have a lot of ideas I'd like to explore with various forms of a Sith Order and re-emergence of the rule of two. A lot of writing possibilities, but I'll have to see how this one plays out before I get too in depth. It's pretty fucking hard to wait for each tiny issue to be released though, fuck. Give me the goddamn TPB already.

I only scanned this because I'm lazy but if you are trying to say that the PT is for hardcore fanboys (which I am) because it fits in with the EU nicely and goes into a bit more depth with EU subjects, then I HEAVILY disagree. The PT raped much of the EU right in it's bum and then killed it's mother.

I have a very open mind, I'm not saying the PT 'sucked', just that it doesn't come close to touching the OT or the EU. Not even close.
