BALANCE OF POWER

I haven't really heard much of Balance of Power, but I am somewhat curious. Being a fan of Biomechanical I'm tempted to pick up Heathen Machine to hear more of John K. on vocals, but I haven't seen many reviews of the disc. Does anyone know if it's worth picking up?

Absolutley! It's a fine melodic metal disc. Keep in mind it's nothing like Biomechanical though, but hearing both Biomechanical and Balance of Power will show you just how diverse John K.'s voice truly is.

Rub it in why don't you! :p

well, thinking of all the great live acts you have in the States (TSO tour every year and all) I'm not exactly convinced that we've got it so much better here... :)
It might also comfort you a bit if I told you that we did have to do some travelling (=flights & hotels) to the Firefest, and the Metal Forever Festival isn't just around the corner either, so it really takes us some efforts to see the bands we love, too.

Still, count me as a vote for BoP at PPVIII! :headbang:

Granted, it's unfortunate that Europe hasn't experienced TSO.......yet. I look for O'Neill to attempt to do that one day, but on a smaller scale. With that said, that's the only band that I can think of that we have and Europe doesn't.

Indeed, I hugely enjoyed TSO when I saw them a year or two ago. Anyways, I may just end up picking up Heathen Machine after I manage to track down Wintersun's live DVD. Thanks for the recommendation!

I think Lance has done his best work since leaving BoP....there were a few places on Perfect Balance where his high notes were a bit soft and poofy...where as John K's high stuff sounded strong and....Tatelike.

On the Heathenology dvd there were definately a few songs that Lance's voice suited better though....and jeez the fake crowd overdubs give me the shitz on that thing.

I'm a big fan of the Lance King-era stuff. I haven't heard any of the more recent albums (though I keep meaning to).

FYI, there is a possibility of a Minneapolis/St. Paul show in February. The band is going to do some recording in town and a friend of mine is trying to arrange a gig while they're here. If it happens, I'll keep you posted!

You're kidding?

I would love to see them. They were one of the first Progmetal bands that I heard. I never did get around to buying any of their cd's though. My brother has one or two and I have barrowed them and enjoyed them greatly. So I would very much enjoy seeing them.

RUN! Don't walk - RUN, to get Heathen Machine! That is an excellent, excellent disc! It is one of my favorite discs of the year. This one reminds me so much of old-school (Mindcrime and before) Queensryche. Definitly worth getting. Hell, if you don't like it, I'll buy it off you for what you paid for it!

Unfortunatly, the only other two BoP discs I have are the two Lance King ones, which are also excellent (and believe me, I just about wore out Perfect Balance!). I'd like to get some of thier other stuff as well, plus I'd also love to see them at a show as well.

I agree, it is odd, given that this is Lance's hometown.

I don't really know the details on why any of the recording is being done here. I'm not really in the loop on that. Nonetheless, my buddy is a friend of the band and he's been trying to arrange a gig for a few months now. As long as the band's gonna be here anyway, they might as well play, right?

I will be sure to post here as soon as I learn anything more!

While I don't know the reason they are recording here, it is not because Lance lives here.

The more I thought about this, the more I thought you might be thinking "Hmm, they're going to Lance's hometown to record, maybe, just maybe, they're working together???" I can assure you that is 100% not the case.

They have been using a studio in Minneapolis for the past few albums. I believe that they found the studio through their prior work with Lance, and they continue to use the studio because they like the quality of the work.

If you like Psyco Drama, you need to pick up Identity Crisis by Section XVI which Corey is also on. You can definitely hear the PD in it. Great stuff.

I guess the Psych/Section XVI guys got a little bit of play out in the bigger world. Here in Colorado Springs I just thought of them as the best local metal band. Glad to see some others have heard of 'em :)

I'll definitely have to pick it up when I get the chance now. I read an interview with John K. at on Treehouse of Death's site where he talked about recording the album. He mentioned that he started recording the vox in the growled/clean style he uses for Biomechanical but that the Balance of Power guys put a stop to that immediately.

Regardless, I'm sure it'll still be interesting to hear him using nothing but melodic clean tones.
