BALANCE OF POWER

I'll definitely have to pick it up when I get the chance now. I read an interview with John K. at on Treehouse of Death's site where he talked about recording the album. He mentioned that he started recording the vox in the growled/clean style he uses for Biomechanical but that the Balance of Power guys put a stop to that immediately.

Regardless, I'm sure it'll still be interesting to hear him using nothing but melodic clean tones.

Smart guys then! :) Growls fit Biomechanical, but not BOP.

Since I mentioned a possible Feb show, I thought I better put in an update. A recent message from their Yahoo group mailing list (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ListofSecrets):

"BoP will be playing May 4 at the Bay Festival in San Francisco along with [edit: Angra no longer playing], Spocks Beard and a few others. (As quoted from Lionel - 98% finalized) This is in addition to the Switzerland show scheduled in April 23? (not exact sure of that date)

A possible Minneapolis date either prior to the May 4 or just after is in also a strong possibility, but we literally just mentioned it, so hopefully more will develop on that in the near future.

Studio time should be booked, but....

I did speak with Corey a few weeks ago and he had received some rough tracks from Tony and he said they are sounding awesome!"

Must have missed this thread the first time around; yeah, I would love to see BOP again, I'll never forget partyin' with 'em at the Cheetah :)

BoP is one of those bands that just can't seem to build momentum. Both "Perfect Balance" and "Heathen Machine" were superb CDs. However, personell changes and long layoffs seem to be holding this band back.

I'd love to see Balance Of Power again, especially with Corey Brown. However, I feel that the curse that surrounds this singer will not keep him in this band for long. If we're lucky, we'll get one album and a possible ProgPower appearance from this lineup before Corey moves onto his next band.

Stay metal. Never rust.

I agree. I'd like to see them on a better label too like SPV. BOP is and has always been one of my favorites. They're one of the bands that got me into this genre to begin with.

I never will forget Lance giving me Perfect Balance!

I was one of those people who thought that BoP without Lance would be a let down. Lance's vocals fit BoP so well. However, the writing on Heathen Machine is so damn good and the vocal performance is so strong that there is no doubt that these guys are getting better with each release. Heathen Machine is my favorite from them. It's a bit heavier than their previous CDs, and the vocals, though a bit different than Lance, are just as strong.

Is that a Shooting Star album cover?

I need to first remind Seastorm that Angra will not be playing at BARfest this year due to visa problems they had.

As for BOP, I feel that Corey is an excellent addition to the band and is great guy as well.
The failure of Magnitude 9 is certainly not a reflection on his character.
That would be based on another unnamed personality issue in that band.
I strongly feel that Corey's voice will bring back that more soulful vocal sound that BOP captured with Lance.
I'm looking forward to hearing some really good new material out here in SF when they hit that stage.
I highly suggest to those BOP fans out there, that you make the trip.
I feel honored to be opening for them.
:headbang: :kickass:

Good call. I pasted that from a posting that was probably before Angra dropped off. I've edited the original post to avoid any confusion.

sort of an update - BoP will not be playing in MN in May. Just the SF show...

I was trying to get them here in Feb for a Birthday gig (I hit 40) but it didn't pan out.

BoP have been using a engineer in Minneapolis since early on for mixing and mastering. Lionel and Todd hit it off so well that Lionel partnered up with him as a co owner of a new studio. That's why they keep coming to Mpls.

Corey, John, and Lance are all great singers, each bringing something special to the mix

Anyway, BoP's website has never been what I call "up to date" so I invite you all to join the list of secrets:
groups.yahoo.com/group/listofsecrets
which is usually 95% quicker than waiting for info off the web site.

Thanks SeaStorm for keeping ppl in the loop here. (when is that next poker party?):headbang:

Is there any more recent information on Balance of Power. I check their site periodically, but as was mention previously, the B.O.P. site is rarely updated.

What's the latest word?

I spoke with Lance King last month and I know that he is gearing up for Prog-Power with his project(s) and the bands he has on Nightmare Records, he has his hands full.

Corey Brown Rocked with Mag 9 and I'd love to hear him with BOP; the BOP stuff with John on vox reminded me too much of everything else that John sings, and of course Lance is one of my favorite vocalists of all-time. I originally met him in a metal bar in Milwaukee, WI called T.A.Verns when he was is GEMINI - they played upstairs and we were playing downstairs. I checked GEMINI out between our sets - he was great then and he's gotten better!!!

This is odd that you bring this up, because I was spinning Hethenology just the other day. As far as any updates regarding BOP, I have no idea. I'm not sure what keeps them from putting new discs out these days.

I am still a big fan of BOP and spin them regularly, Lances stuff though as he was the best vocalist for them in my opinion. Corey sang well at Barfest 2007 but I wasn't blown away, they played much better at PPUSA 2 in my opinion. They have been mighty quiet these last couple years.

They were amazing at PP so many years ago and "Ten Tales..." still ranks as one of my favorite AOR/prog albums. Lance has NEVER sounded better. Only draw back to the album is the stale drum programming tones. Other than that a 10/10.

I spoke to Lance right after his departure from BOP and we started talking about BOP's drums. He said that Lionel lives in a flat in England and can't set up a full kit due to the noise it would create - thus the computer driven drums. Lance also said that there were a couple of tunes that they had to slow down in live applications - This was after I mentioned the snare rolls at machine gun speed on "Searching for the Truth"...

He went on to say that the drummer in PYRAMAZE is the best he's ever worked with. Lance had his claws out a hair - the BOP thing didn't end on a positive note between Lance and the other guys.
