Ballads

Well, traditionally a ballad was simply a song that told a story. But modern ballads of course are those sappy things bands play to get chicks. :) Usually period a slower instrumentation that's usually cleanly played (either clean guitar or piano) with some sort of "heavy" part in the middle.

Some favorites:
Edguy - Land of the Miracle, Save Me
Queensryche - Silent Lucid, I Will Remember, Anybody Listening
Skid Row - I Remember You, Quicksand Jesus (best song they ever wrote), In a Darkened Room, Wasted Time
Metallica - Fade to Black, Nothing Else Matters
Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour
Motley - Home Sweet Home
Priest - Diamonds and Rust (Acoustic version), Dreamer Deciever, Realms of Death
Sabbath - Sign of the Southern Cross, Children of the Sea
Dio - Don't Talk to Strangers
Ozzy - Momma
Dokken - Alone Again
Kiss - I Still Love You
Slaughter - Fly to the Angels
Tesla - Love Song
Firehouse - All their famous ones :p
Crimson Glory - Lonely
Sacrerd Warrior - Sweet Memories
Dream Theater - Another Day (this song should still be played today on Jazz stations)
Hair of the Dog - Rescue Me
Brainstorm - Heavenly

All off the top of my head :saint:

There are lots of ballads, but I'd like to focus on metal/power ballads :)

Evergrey - Words Mean Nothing, The Shocking Truth, I'm Sorry
Nevermore - The Heart Collector
Dio - Don't Talk to Strangers
Queensryche - The Lady Wore Black
Judas Priest - Victim of changes, Before The Dawn
Slaughter - Fly To The Angels
Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour
Heart - Love Alive, Dog & Butterfly, Mistral Wind, Alone
Lita & Ozzy - Close my eyes forever

There must be tons of ballads, esp in the 80s from metal bands that I love(d), but I can't think of many right now :erk:

Blind Guardian pretty much owns every other band when it comes to ballads.

Besides BG's ballads (too many to name), Some of my favorites are Rhapsody's 'Guardiani Del Destino' (hopelessly catchy), Gamma Ray's 'Lake of Tears', Dream Theater's 'Solitary Shell', etc.

A "metal ballad" is a song that has more expression in it than power. Often played with a clean guitar style.

Our very own "Baldy Boy" from "Panic Cell" has a great ballad called "1000 Words" which is outstanding.

I won't name all of the Vanden Plas tunes that could be considered ballads as they are a very melodic band, but I have to mention "Scarlet Flower Fields" and "Silently."

Others mentioned Dio's "Don't Talk to Strangers" which is an excellent tune. Tesla and Skid Row also had some great ones.

Anytime Tony Martin does a ballad.... it is awesome. "Nightwing" is a great Sabbath ballad.

"Anytime" by MSG is a great ballad.

Though not really a ballad..... it is by their standards..... Slayer "Seasons in the Abyss."

Can't forget Metal Church. The Howe era put out many songs borderline ballad. "Anthem of the estranged" I consider a ballad and was awesome.

If Klaus Meine didn't look like an orc from "The Lord of the Rings" movies, he might could have toppled Gene Simmons as far as sleeping with the most women. The Scorpions were one of the few bands I could tolerate mushy love ballads from. Klaus could put some heart into those songs.

Let's not forget Savatage!

"Believe" is one of the best ballads of all time (not that I'm biased or anything :)

Also, "If I Go Away", "When The Crowds Are Gone", "St. Patrick's" . . .okay, I'll stop now.

Like Bryant, I'm leaving out certain bands that lend themselves to Ballads (Ten, Allen-Lande, etc). I'll have to go through my bands and see what else is out there that hasn't been mentioned.

Your favorite ballads? What's your criteria for a song to be a "ballad?"

Criteria? The feeling, not much the lyrics but the feeling. So out of the blue and without much brain cells consume:

Rata Blanca - 'Ella'
Rush - 'Tears'
Rush - 'Losing It'
Deep Purple - 'Wasted Sunsets'
Scorpions - 'Still Loving You'
Yngwie Malmsteen - 'Crying'
Judas Priest - 'Before The Dawn'
Black Sabbath - 'Changes'
Black Sabbath - She's Gone
Thin Lizzy - 'Frankie Carroll'
Thin Lizzy - 'Still In Love With You' (live)
Thin Lizzy - 'The Sun Goes Down'
Motorhead - 'One More Fucking Time'
Def Leppard - 'Bringing On The Heartbreak'
Hammerfall - 'Glory To The Brave'
Skid Row - 'Wasted Time'
Metallica - 'Fade To Black'
Megadeth - 'Promises'
Blue Murder - 'Out Of Love'
Rainbow - 'Temple Of The King'

etc.

NP: Hammerhawk - 'One By One'

The key of a ballad is, in my opinion, the feeling. Then you could add being emotional or melancholic.

Some ballads that comes to my mind (someone said):

Savatage: When The Crowds are gone (best ballad ever), Believe
Riot: Bloodstreets (more power ballad or mid tempo but tons of feeling)
Skid Row: Anyone from "Skid Row" or "Slave to the grind".
Anathema: Forgotten hopes, One last goodbye
Testament: The Legacy
Twisted Sister: The prize
Dokken: Alone Again, Walk Away
Death Angel: A room with a view, Veil of Deception
Crimson Glory: Painted skies, Heart of steel
Grand Funk Railroad: Heartbreaker
Steelheart: I´ve never let you go

Just to name a few...

You HONESTLY like that song? You can actually listen to it without having a concussion? Wow, you sir, are without a doubt, A dumbass

Name calling? Nice. Perhaps Hawk hasn't defined the guidelines for this forum in a language you're able to understand. In other words - Take that shit to AOL. But, to answer your question... Yes I can listen to this song and what's even better - I enjoy it.

Just a note - you can criticize what folks listen to without tossing in personal insults. If you can't understand this- then you sir are the real dumbass.
