so all this essential discs stuff got me thinking about something else ...

bands that define genres in your mind ... a band that is the pure definition, without a doubt, of the genre it belongs to

post specific discs if you want ... but band first.

we can go into other genres as well ... outside of metal.

ok, for example

Thrash = Exodus
Black Metal = Burzum

thrash - megadeth
stoner - kyuss
black metal - darkthrone
awesome - primus
black man blues thievery - led zeppelin
heavy with time crazy signatures and shit - meshuggah
ice cream - pink floyd

for me

Blackmetal - darkthrone
thrash - kreator
doom - reverend bizarre
funeral doom - skepticism
power metal - blind guardian
punk :)err: dirty looks) bad religion
neo folk - sol invictus

gothic metal - paradise lost (yeah, because of that album)

progressive rock - rush (yep, they werent the first, but probably the most significant)

doom metal - black sabbath (no comments needed!)

pop music (as in popular music) - the beatles

psychedelic rock - pink floyd (not sure this is correct, but hey, had to mention the best band in the world)

Hmmm. All good female vocalists tickle my fancy. A good voice can make an ugly brutish woman as attractive as Carmen Electra circa "Singled Out". I'd even make passionate love to Elisa Martin for having such a glorious set of cords.

prog in the true sense: King Crimson
post-rock: GYBE and its incestuous branches
viking: Moonsorrow
defiance of all genres while dabbling in all genres: Frank Zappa
post-hardcore: Neurosis, Isis, and their progeny
autumnal metal: Agalloch
all that was good about 80s metal: Iron Maiden
all that sucked about 80s metal: insert glam band here. Or Manowar.

Eh, they paved the way. Error on my part. Suppose they didn't define the genre, rather was a catalyst for inspiration to.

Considering they released "Black Metal" agreed on a level, but the sound itself wasn't reminiscent of blackmetal, nor deathmetal either really. Bah, fuck genre dropping. People make asses of themselves while doing it and its usually me.

Venom was more punk than anything ... their tongue in cheek lyrical theme was picked up by BM bands as something serious

they were the KISS of the darkside ...

Not sure if it counts as a genre, but:

I-totally-want-to-nail-the-lead-singer-Hair Metal = Femme Fatale.
