yo...
as some of you know I tried the painkiller and the nailbomb...both muddy as fuck IME (in comparison to the EMG)....some of you have heard the clips and agreed.

Anyways, I gave BKP another try and installed the Aftermath in my San Dimas Dinky, and I gotta say I really like it.
of course it's still not as tight as the 81, but it's nice and chunky...wouldn't use it for the tightest fast palm mutes, but it'll definitely find its way on one or the other record, nice pickup.

here's the comparison:

Pickup A

Pickup B

(I know, the timing is off in the first half....you'll get the idea though)

Granted, in this clip I didn't do any fast palm muting, so it's not THAT obvious that the EMG is tighter, but you'll hear the quality of the pickups quite nicely....
thinking about equipping one of my live guitars with these...backup without batteries has its advantages

this is the guitar btw:

I would like it known that I disagree with your statement on the Nailbomb. I have Nailbomb in my Les Paul and my Ibanez, and neither are muddy. Just my 2p.

My preference betwixt these two is Pickup B. It sounds smoother, and way less grainy. It's like the difference between holding glass shards in your hand, and holding sand in your hand.

What kind of guitar did you have the painkillers in?

I have them in my mahogany body, ebony fretboard guitar, and it's basically the perfect pickup!

The majority of clips I've heard of Nailbombs and Painkillers were anything but muddy. In fact, clips using those pups were always some of the cleanest sounding ones people would post.

I take it that the Aftermath is geared towards the "modern metal" market then?

Lasse,

Seriously if you want the BITE and TIGHTNESS of the EMG and still remain passive. Go with the Miracle Man. I have them in my 7string and my Les Paul and I will never change them. All the Gain, Punch, and Tightness of the EMG with more dynamics!

Not really, no.

The aftermath is tighter, all things being equal.

A=EMG
B=BKP

I've just recorded another clip for which I tweaked the amps a bit more, don't wanna post it in this thread though cause it's not a comparison.
Will make a new thread for it in a bit

No way, don't go by what the website says. Seriously I have been through almost every pickup BKP makes and the Miracle Man is the tightest pickup they make.

Took me 2 and a half years to go through everything they had, cost me a SHIT TON in shipping. But it was well worth it.

I'm not going by the website. I'm going by my ears. I've used miracle men before. Several of them.

They're only just 'officially' started making the aftermath; have you tried one?

No, BUT I do have to say Me and Lasse both enjoy the same types of tones, and I can tell you the Miracle Man is the type of pickup he WOULD enjoy. We both make the same complaints on the EMG's, and the Miracle Man solved both of them without any of the complaints Lasse is making about the Aftermath.

Still prefer B. I've never had EMG's, and I don't have anything against them. Was just using my ears. To me, the first clip has this mid-range "shardiness" that I don't like. It isn't smoothed over like a sine-wave, it's very ice-picky.
