My bass player and I did a little DI shootout awhile back with his Warwick Corvette. DIs range from affordable to very expensive. The first 3 are 1 take through a splitter, and the last 2 are another take through the same splitter. Which is your favorite and why?

Well there doesn't seem to be much interest, so here are the the DIs:

A) Hellborg preamp DI out

B) Countryman Type 85

C) Avalon U5

D) Radial J48

E) Radial JDI

Personally, I hear the extra low end of D and E as muffled and lacking the high end present in A, B, and C. I have a feeling that this difference is mainly due to the player. I'll bet he had a slightly different angle on the pick or played at a slightly different area of the string during that second take.

For us, the real test was between the first 3 anyway, with the Radials thrown in just for the hell of it. We're going with the Hellborg. Any thoughts?

I like A the most. It has a nice bottom end. The top end also gives a nice attack (grind) to the sound.
