bass on morningrise

he played a 6-stringed "arvidson" - never heard of the brand, probably a swedish luthier or something.

by the way, i highly doubt Mikael wrote all lines, there is so much difference between monringrise and MAYH...

you could say that mayh didn't _need_ that sort of bass, cos of it's different style, but you have to wonder how opeth might have sounded with johan on bass after the first 2 albums

and btw, advent 9.30 is genius :P

The old bassist was better than Mendez. Mendez is just standard bass. the other guy made the bass a more interesting and up front instrument. I feel if they ditched Nordin (horrible drummer) got Lopez and kept Defarfa (spelling) they would have been the best they could be. Their old bassist was just very innovative and you could feel the emotion in his playing, he could just get this (twang) sound that was very entertaining. He had a great range, and he really knew his instrument. Anyone who likes Mendez better I guess just does not have an ear for music.

i wish Moonie would reprise my all-time favorite quote of his right about now. i'm too lazy to type it myself.

my opinion: Defarfalla sounds like a fart; Bass Player is rudimentary and nearly pointless in a death metal band. Yeah, he's got a nice tone and all that but we all know Bass Player is in the band because he has a cool sideways headbanging style....and a really big dick.

hahaha!

I didn't like the bass on morningrise at first, as usually i like my bass felt and not heard, you know, seat of the pants stuff. Yet recently I've found morningrise to be my favourite opeth album. Still sounds as good as the first day I heard it.

Shit......i just started a thread about this, without seeing this one. Apologies.

I like both styles. Johan has the slap / pop feel down quite well and reminds me of steve digiorgio (sadus, death etc). I also doubt that Akerfeldt wrote these lines....but what do i know. Mendez does some good slap bass also on the end of BWP.

I also love the bass loop on drapery falls, totally agree.

I always think its a shame no "proper" bassist was used in MAYH, where the basslines just follow the same guitar riff pattern.

Nordin was a horrible drummer? I loved his patterns on night and silent water, when Akerfeldt whispers:

You sleep in the light,
Yet the the night,
and the silent water,
still so daaaarrrrrrrrrkkk.......

he seemed fine to me....but prob not as good as Lopez, who manages to seem like he's doing a drum roll with his feet sometimes.

ASTONISHING

Lopez is drastically overrated. As are Bass Player and Lindgren. I'm not saying they suck, I'm saying that Opeth's music is composed and written by Mike. Well, at least that's what every source I've ever come across says. I'm under the impression that Mike is Opeth and Opeth is Mike - that Opeth would sound like Mike wanted no matter who's in the band. Maybe I'm wrong. But I will stand by my assertion that Lopez is way overrated here on the forum. Great drummer though.

I like the bass lines on Morningrise a lot, it reminds me of Death's bass lines in individual thought patterns album, cool stuff.

I don't think Lopez is overrated, his technique is pretty different from other drummers, which i think sets him apart from the norm, there are subtle things he does that stick out to me.
plus, mike probly keeps his parts minimal so he doesn't steal the limelight heh.
