bass on morningrise

you can tell martin could be hella technical if he tried, but the great thing about his bass playing is that he isn't trying to be. Thats the mark of a good bass player.

lopez is a very precise drummer, stylistically. whether that makes him 'great' or not, i don't give a shit. i think it's apt for Opeth.

mendez is no claypool, but ubertechnical bass wouldn't really be apropriate for the atmosphere in Opeth anyway. it's the same as the lopez situation. if you are listening to Opeth to fulfill your craving for technical and complex music, you need more help than i can offer with this post.

i think the bass on morningrise is probably my favorite of any opeth album, followed by deliverance. i think the bass on deliverance is swank, especially to play. but that bass on morningrise is what really gives that album, especially side B, it's ambience.

also, the girl on the right seems to have a much rounder ass.

OK, I'll throw this little question into the pan.

I have never seen opeth play live. How does mendez fair when they are playing stuff from morningrise and / or orchid???

On Advent, he has to play some parts up an octave, so it doesn't sound as cool. Also the sliding bits are done on a fretted bass instead of fretless, so those sound stupider. Otherwise, he has no trouble...that song's easy to play compared to say...Nectar. As for Forest of October, I'm pretty sure the other guy used a 4 string fretted bass on that cd anyway (maybe it was a fretless, but it was definitely a 4 string) so it sounds fine.
