yo...
does have any experiences with the d'addario pro steel strings?
they're supposed to have biting highs and deep lows for a piano like sound...
sounds like they could be cool for metal, anyone using them?
my concern is....we started tracking with normal nickelwound DR and will continue bassrecordings tomorrow with the pro steel...
if they sounds good AND noticeably different I we might have to redo the 5 tracks we've already recorded (puke), but if the tone is great I'm willing to do that of course.

so what I wanna hear now is 15 people saying "they're kickass for metal, I'm using them all the time".
what are your experiences?

That's all I string on my basses. IIRC Dave Otero is a big proponent of them for recording as well. They have a scooped and very aggressive sound. I think they sound awesome.

+1

Any set of steel strings like Blue Steels or DR Hi-Beams will do the job. I use d'addario most of the time because I find them to be the most reliable.

They can be harsh and some players complain that they tear up their fingers. That's precisely when I slap them in the mother fucking face and tell them to suck it up.

You'll probably end up retracking.

I just changed my bass strings to pro steels and it really woke up the tone. Before it just sounded flubby, now its nice and bright.

Cheers,
George.

Only ever used the Nickel wounds, swear by em, have to try the Pro-Steels though...

Probably just best to try them and see how it goes, like you said, if it sounds good then you'll re-record the previous tracks

I used to use Rotosounds found that they never held the tone long enough... to be honest, the three makes of bass strings i prefer for longevity and tone combined are either Peavey, Warwick EMPs (i managed to get a pack at a 1/4 price rather than paying £40) and D'Addario...

now i'm primarily D'Addario

fuck, I'm getting the best basstone EVER!!!
and it's onlz DI so far (Avalon U5 and LA610) and not even reamped through the Ampeg yet.....
Bass-Boner!

Haha, told you. Let the bass retracking commence!

Someone mentioned Pyramid strings. I've been wanting to try those. Maybe I'll order a pair now just to have on hand. Strings on bass are extremely important. Much more so than on guitar. For recording they need to be brand new, no more than 30 min of playing and stringed up the night before tracking. This is a simple thing that a lot of people could do to vastly improve their tone easily.

flubby sounding bass strings are my biggest problem at the moment.
what strings are you using exactly!?
do you have a link!?

Well my set is a tapered .130 for the low b and then a light set .105-.45, both in long scale. Stainless steel strings make a big difference in tone when you first change. My DIs sound way better now, also the 130 is doing a lot better than the 120 that was on there before. my 5 string is tuned like the lower 5 strings of a guitar in drop b tuning, and the balance of the 130 is trying to even out the tension. If you go to daddario.com they have the sets there and the individual string gauges pretty easily visable. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
George.
