Bella Morte Songs For The Dead
Metropolis Records October 26th
By Russell Garwood
Songs For the Dead sees Bella Morte step away from the electronic influences shown on their previous full length, As The Reasons Die. Instead, here we have some death rock/goth-infused punk. So, dig out your leather and tartan, get a Mohican and some eyeliner, and lets pose
So, the music on display follows a pretty simple formula anthemic choruses, memorable hooks and reflective moments. Melodic guitars carry the tunes with a gritty sound and some memorable, downcast tunes. Solos add variety and show occasional metal leanings.Occasional pianos and electronics provide variation, but the sound is largely guitar driven. Underpinning this you find crushing drums and less powerful bass. The vocals are raw and honest, as you would expect from a punk-influenced sound.
With all of this recorded in three days, the EP has a live, unrefined feel, that works well with the energetic sound. As you would expect, the sound is not polished, but again, this suits the style. Pure homage to times past, Songs For the Dead is very listenable for fans of the style, but for everyone is no such necessity.
