Also, what's wrong with the snare? I mean the entire style of music is wretched beyond belief.. the snare sound merely fits! It needs to have a tone that can cut above that mush of sound!

Well of course it needs to have a tone that can cut through the other unrelenting sounds in the mix (which is everything, haha), but I don't think that automatically means it's time to bust out the ol' WWI era camping teapot to use for a snare drum.

High snares do work better in grind/deathmetal stuff, i learned that a nice picollo works wonders in a busy blastbeat infested mix.
