Blastbeats are just another tool that, when used well, can add quite a bit to a song. But, much like the downpicked, palm-muted thrash riff which, without variation and well-crafted song writing can be one of the most boring sounding things of all time, it turns into just a generic way of being "metal."
Speaking of Suffocation, I have always thought one of the greatest convergences of riff and drums in death metal occurs at the 2:20 mark in "Infecting the Crypts."
