I like Enslaved, but the new album is just too... poppy? I won't say it's bad because it's not, but it distinctly lacking the vaguely folky sound I love from their previous material.

i think it's partly the production, but i couldn't agree more about the lack of a folkish feel, or even just a folklorish feel, stories being told on cold winter nights.

I would consider Alcest, DsO, and Agalloch to be my favorites this year but from a metal standpoint, Inquisition and Hour of 13 are probably the best I've heard. IMO Ares Kingdom's newest is overrated, and I still need to hear the new Weapon album.

Some updates to my list:

I finally got around to giving the new Immolation album a listen and I really liked it. It honestly seems like this album has been out forever, not sure why I didn't listen to it sooner.

I also listened to the Triptykon album, really enjoyed it as well. A lengthy album but it hardly seemed so, as it captured my attention for the full duration.

And Agalloch's new album is beginning to grow on me.
