Best black metal releases of 2006

Are you mad, Agalloch is Black Metal alright, just not in a typically Norsk sense, musically speaking. But as with Enslaved, they use it as a foundation, not a primary voice.

Uh...not really. Care to post any trace of Black Metal whatsoever that you can find in their music? The closest thing you can argue is the Bergtatt influence, but that wouldn't be a very persuasive argument.

Agalloch isn't black metal. They haven't got as strong as a (neo)folk influence anymore, but they are somewhat post-rock ish if post-anything . The band members are influenced by black metal but it doesn't appear to be all that evident in their music.

Then you tell me what it is guys. I hear Bergtatt, yes, even Ved Buens Ende in sections, especially on Pale Folklore. Lyrically, they are very much so, vocally most definitely.

Wikipedia entry: "Agalloch is an American experimental black metal band formed in 1996 in Portland, Oregon."

BNR Metal: "...Pale Folklore, a sort of laidback, atmospheric post-black metal album"

Meanwhile, Metal Archives has them as "Atmospheric Folk/Dark Metal", which I also agree with.

I'm not trying to strictly pin them down as BM, but they definitely have a strong affiliation.

I completely disagree. Their lyrics are not necessarily related to Black Metal at all, it's clearly an appreciation for nature, which can be easily found outside of Black Metal, and the vocals have never reminded me of Black Metal except for a couple of intentionally placed Black Metal shrieks on Not Unlike The Waves. I really don't have a proper label for them, but Black Metal is not in it.

Anyway, we should probably get back on topic, though I suppose it's fruitless as the answer is clearly "none."

I don't know if such general sites are credible sources though...BNR metal also has Cradle of Filth down as black metal if I remember correctly. And I don't put much faith in Wikipedia either for the same reasons.

Aside from the occasional harsher vocals, I don't see much black metal influence in their music.

Agree to disagree :)

For me OM from Negura Bunget is the best black metal release of 2006. Amazing and unique stuff. Haven't heard too much other black metal for 2006 but I must say 2007 is off to a really bad start for music.

I think 2007 will pick up in the second half. I remember thinking the exact same thing at this point last year but things certainly got better, 2006 was a great year for metal. For me there are more 'big name' favourites this year, but last year, a lot of bands I hadn't really listened or heard of before made pleasant surprises - I hope it will be like this year too.

As far as black metal goes...Wedard, despite not being a studio-produced album as far I know, his release of "Einsamer Winterweg" was just beautiful and equally melancholic so I might pick Wedard. Overall, Dornenreich's "Durch Den Traum" was my favourite album of the year.

No mentions for Leviathan - The Blind Wound? (Sapthuran/Leviathan split)

Thumbs down to you all.

As always Leviathan delivers, but frustrates with hard to find splits with shit bands (excepting Xasthur and the upcoming Nachtmystium split).

I don't know why no one talks about this release. The melodies are just great. Fans of newer Deathspell Omega should love this. Wrest is the most tasteful drummer in all of black metal, and his bass and vocal work is superb as always. Mainly it's the melodies. Incredibly catchy in a non-gay way. Very headbangable as well. Nowhere near the suicidal black metal the band once was.

Also:
Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells
Nachtmystium - Instinct: Decay
Manes - Svarte Skoger (re-release of classic demos)

Aborym - Generator
Anaal Nathrakh - Eschaton
Carpathian Forest - Fuck You All !!!
Dusk - Deathgate
Hellveto - Zmierzch
Horna - Ääni Yössä
Melechesh - Emissaries
Nachtmystium - Instinct: Decay
Satyricon - Now, Diabolical

I listened to it once, but I don't recall being that impressed. Maybe I'll have to give it another shot? I've said this before, I found the Drudkh album to be a bit overrated while not being bad, and as for Nachtmystium, I though that album had some good stuff but generally nothing I particularily cared for.

To be quite honest though, I haven't quite fully appreciated the American black metal scene. I like the slight innovation or uniqueness but I find it to be a bit overrated - of course that is in my taste and musical preferences. As many have mentioned Wolves in the Throne Room - I though their latest was good, and the track "Queen of the Borrowed Light" was brilliant but the rest of the album didn't quite match up to that and I felt the other songs dragged on a bit given their lengths. This year especially I particularily liked France and Germany, and I don't think there's an album mentioned in this thread that I haven't listened to.

It definitely is worth a few more listens, especially considering the short length. Skip the Sapthuran stuff.

The short splits from Leviathan have the advantages of being fairly easy to digest; and they allow for experimentation on a smaller scale. There are ideas that may not have 45-60 of life in them, but are easily entertaining for 20-30 minutes. That's why the splits are all so different.

Raventale - On The Crystal Swings
Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells
