Rock, more specifically a harder version of post-rock with metal influence I suppose, sort of like Irrepress and Russian Circles.

I think the dominant influence in Agalloch's music still remains Metal, though they've obviously continued to branch out more and more in different ways.

Om is a post rock band not a black metal band but still their 2006 release is one of my favorite post rock albums for that year, really great stuff.

Enochian Crescent - Black Church
...was my favourite, not really a traditional black metal album but it was really punchy and fun which I find appealing. Some great over the top vocal performances and spastic riffing that still flowed well. Cool packaging too with the art engraved on the plastic.

Impaled Nazarene - Pro Partia Finlandia
...not really a pure black metal album either but probably more than, say, Agalloch. Nothing much has changed in the last few years with these guys, still hyper-aggressive songs at a relentless pace with fun lyrics:

Vocals and lyrics don't mean shit.

Not in deciding a genre, no. You get an 'overall picture' of a band's sound to decide what category they fall under. So the guitar production and riffs/melodies play a greater role.
