Is it just me or does a large majority of black metal suck?

I personally find Slipknot less overtly offensive than Children of Bodom.

Someone bought me Hatebreeder for Christmas one year. Worst present ever.

First 3 Bodom albums are classic.

Here's some black thrash that definitely counts as black metal ^

At The Heart of Winter ^ ... This a great gateway album for real Black Metal.. If you dont like it youre probably not going to like Black Metal

Summoning ^ Great stuff...

Black metal suffers from being a bit up its own ass. Seems to be a big race to be the most eclectic. Some of it requires so much fucking context to understand it's like... shit, have a little consideration for the listener, yeah?

Look, I'm not saying these people aren't within their right to express themselves. But you can only go so far out of your way to disregard listenability before your music becomes... well, unlistenable.

What a cozy world you must live in.

If that were true, they wouldn't have released it to the public.

Because they want people to make their own judgments about it but the artist is going to release material regardless of what the public thinks of it. They know it will resonate with some at least.

I'm curious why you listen to a genre such as metal when its entire history has been anti-establishment and anti-conformity which is the complete opposite of how you want artists to act when you implore them to be considerate of the listener.

If artists cared about what people think, nobody would release anything since at least some would think it's shit. Use your head please.

Yeah to answer the question. It really does (by my account).
Because the musicians are more worried about the overall mood and atmosphere than actually crafting good music. A bunch of angry pwr chords, strumming trebley chords, blasts and raspy vocals do the trick, whereas you can't just do that for death metal for e.g. it's a formulaic genre too but you do need to put a few actual riffs together.
