Lately, I've been doing a lot of reading as well as listening to "see" the finer points in some of todays music. A lot of the time we focus so much on the music, that the words themself do not get the same attention.

My personal vote goes to.....

Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth)

The guy not only writes great music, but his words and poetic artistry are top notch. A storyteller and poet as well as a musician...

Agree...? Or your vote goes to?

I dunno... I'm really digging Evergrey's stuff lately... to the point of obsession...

So, my vote goes to Tom.

Though, on the complete other side of the spectrum, James Hetfield gets the worst lyricist ever award for Death Magnetic, because anyone who has the "ability" to rhyme, for instance, "apocalypse" and "justification" by adding the "UHH!" syllable to the end of it, just makes me sick.

Snoop Dogg. Just because he really tells what's live about. Sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex, money, drugs, alcohol, bitches, sex and so on.

To be honest. I have no clue who to call the best lyricist.

Well, I don't read song lyrics much, really (maybe because I always feel they suck :D), but a few have caught my ear:

Ihsahn
Mikael Åkerfeldt
Milan Fras
Till Lindemann (mostly his older stuff, from Herzeleid to Mutter)

Personally I wonder why people think Åkerfeldt's lyrics are special, apart from using some uncommon english words...
I don't think they are bad, don't get me wrong but seeing that Mikael just writes them within minutes during some studio sessions (as seen on their DVD) just to fill that void and support the music doesn't really highlight them for me, I guess^^

Where the lyrics really take you somewhere else, listen to some Anathema stuff, Danny and Vincent Cavanagh go deep...

Not to offend anyone, I know it's all down to personal taste and I love Opeth, I just think that their lyrics are their weakest link if any...

Maynard James Keenan from Tool - agreed. The likes of Vicarious and the Pot are fucking genius.

Hetfield was good in his day, wrote some great ambiguous lyrics about various social, religious and political issues without it sounding so.

I love all of Devin's stuff, although ocassionally he can go cheesy (but still pull it off). He went through a weird phase recently of singing about babies though... not so good.

I love all the lyrics on Misery Signals 'Of Malice and The Magnum Heart'. Incredible stuff.

Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Argue, and you're a fool.

In the world of heavy music: Jacob Bannon.
