Best "current" lyricist..... Your vote goes to?

Hetfield was good in his day, wrote some great ambiguous lyrics about various social, religious and political issues without it sounding so.

A lot of his stuff is quotes from books though  The Thing That Should Not Be, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and so on.

I think he did do a lot of the lyrics on Black himself though. Especially the second half of the album features very nice lyrics.

Daniel Gildenlow HANDS DOWN! Go listen to ALL albums and read it!

Ugghh, except for Scarsick - what a pathetic maturity regression that album was; no metaphor or subtlety, just "fuck this, fuck that," spoken word rants about stairmasters and elevators, etc.; overt generalizations about Americans being fat, lazy, materialistic, and/or imperialistic (which, I shit you not, is the "concept" of the album) are both ignorant and cliche, and far below what Gildenlow is capable of. There's still some good musical moments, but christ was that album a step down. However, everything before it (though Be was the beginning of the end, IMO) has amazing lyrical moments (my favorite being the SUBTLE and ABSTRACT political messages of "One Hour by the Concrete Lake")

Back on topic, I love Tony Kakko's stuff (from Sonata Arctica), Nergal (less for the actual meaning of the lyrics, but more for how awesome the words themselves sound in their respective places), and the awesome gothic stuff of Dani Filth.

Oh, and of course Alexi - how can you beat such profound genius as "I don't give a flying fuck motherfucker?"

Tom Waits and Bobby D, both are still alive and making great albums, for metal and rock I can totally get behind Maynard and Fallon. I also have recently noticed the guy who sings for The Human Abstract is an above average writer/singer.

Chuck Schuldiner is my lyrical hero (Symbolic / ITP / TSOP) but I guess he doesn't fit with the title of this thread

Although he's not my fave (cant think of any) I actually thought the lyrics and concept Jonny wrote for the Job For A Cowboy album were really cool!
