Best Guitar Tones Of the 80s

Judas Priest - Painkiller

Painkiller had a fantastic tone, but it didn't come out till the fall of 1990.

British Steel, on the other hand, totally ruled!

+1 on the Styper tone. I always thought that sounded very heavy.

Wasn't a huge fan of the Dokken tone.... what we could hear of it, anyway. A lot of Lynch's rhythm tones were buried in the mixes.

How did I know that you were going to jump in there, Jay? :D

Because its a Felony to be a Liar, so i had to Turn On The Action and throw him Into The Fire Without Warning, because im The Hunter and got no Bullets To Spare.
Im Burning Like A Flame, so i gotta' Stick To My Guns and avoid getting Lost Behind The Wall.

It aint' easy being cheesy!

Yes, buried. I'm talking about the original masters, of course. Vocals and snare waaaaaay out in front. Might be different on the Youtube vids.

FWIW, I saw Dokken 3 times during the glory days.... :p

Thats as cheesy as the fringe jacket and the bolo hat in the Alone Again video!

No disrespect Glenn, but I beg to differ on this one. There's nothing buried about George's tones on those albums (original masters). But yes, the snare and vocals are up front. That's the 80's metal sound (especially L.A. metal...my favorite). :)

All those vids except "The Hunter" are copies of the original masters. ;)
And of course the vocals are way out front.. the band isnt called Dokken for no reason.. but now lets play a game: Tell me a single 80's glam band that didnt have the snare way out front? ;)

Fuck you.

Those tones aren't tough to get actually. It just takes a bit of cash to get a modded JMP, bump that though a 75 loaded marshall with a condenser on it and you are good to go!

Wagener has a thread over on Gear Sluts where he talks about how he got all his tones back then.

His setup back then was typically:
Fostex M11RP ribbon as the main mic and the MCI 500 mic pres of the console with a UREI 530 EQ on the buss. And guitars were usually recorded to the 3M 32track digi machine
