Best lyricist......

I don't pay much attention to lyrics but...

Martin Walkyier
Neil Peart
Bruce Dickinson
Rob Halford (especially the old material)
Lemmy
Arjen Lucassen

Warrel Dane
Geoff Tate
Martin Walkyier (how does he come up with all these puns?)
Dio (let's forget the cliché about dragons and so on, he's much more than that)
Halford (except from the cheesy 80's lyrics)
Dickinson
Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe / Psychotic Waltz)
Chuck Schuldiner
John K (Biomechanical)

Indeed.
Along with Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride and Warrell Dane of Nevermore....and, of course, Sting (not metal, but so what?). Great lyricists.

Other greats are the bands Emperor and In the Woods.

Among the worst are....well most metal lyrics are trite. Priest lyrcis have mostly been awful, particularly the Ripper-era records.

Indeed, especially like you pointed in the Howe era. 'Fake Healer', 'In Harm's Way', 'God Of Second Chance' are just miimal examples of the quality of the lyrics.

Martin Walkyier is my favorite lyricist, and he is a MIGHTY talented one too
again, IMO, but I think that Scott Ian is a good lyricist
Souza/Holt is an amazing team aswell....
I think MegaDave is, but some may disagree...
no matter what he wrote after 1989 (I'm talking about what he wrote before), James Hetfield is a pretty good lyricist
and lets not forget the best lyricist of them all.........moi

jk jk :Spin:

As non-English speaking (first language that is) it's harder to hear and concentrate on actual lyrics. Some that do jump out for me are Queensryche, Evergrey & last Ayreon album. i also remember in the 80's we let a Japanese guy translate a Vow Wow text sheet...All he said the whole time was "Oh, vety Aggressif, vety aggressif..." so Vow Wow lyrics must be outstanding.

I agree! Before and After '89 Megadave has always had pretty good lyrics and Hetfield for all his faults is good ....
