I got a guitar center gift card for my birthday and i'm in need of a new mic. What would you guys recommend? I searched the forums to no avail, so i figured i'd ask!

Thanks for any input!

I'm sorry for not specifying guys! I meant for recording purposes. The 4 i was actually looking at were:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.co...rge-Diaphragm-Condenser-Microphone?sku=276790

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rode-Microphones-NT1A-Condenser-Mic-Bundle?sku=476502

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/AKG-Perception-220-Condenser-Microphone?sku=271291

those are obviously a little more than my budget but i think maybe one of those might be worth it? Right now i have a mxl 990, so i'm in deperate need of an upgrade. haha

I have used NT1A multiple times when I was working on a fixed-term contract in a demostudio at Helsinki and found it very "usable". It is a bit bright on the top and needs a bit of de-essing on most of the singers, but otherwise it's pretty good. For a "first decent mic" it's really good, but I would get something else instead nowadays as it is a bit limited. I give it a 7-/10.

I own the NT2A myself, it's very similiar in tone but it is more of a poor-man's C414 as it has similiar features (switchable polar pattern, highpass filter and pad), I think it's something like 298€ at Thomann. If I would have to choose only one mic from any pricerange, it would definately be the AKG C414. It's not the cheapest or the most expensive mic around (it's around $1k), but it's one of those "desert island" mics along SM57.

I have been using a Heil PR30 with great results on vocals. $250 new and I got both of mine on eBay for $200 (each). Great on guitars too. I have an NT1A and I hate it, very brittle sounding. It hangs in my venue as a $200 crowd mic. Lol.

Ah, yes, the Heil PR30 and PR40 are some of my favorite mics for under $300.

+1 to AudioTechnica LDC. I have an AT2035 and so far it's worked great on both vocalists I used it on (male singer and screamer + female singer).

2035 user here. I prefer it over my 57 for my own voice, more clarity in the highs without having to add them in with eq.
