yep, i'm a cheapskate.

I don't need anything too fancy- because i'll have access to LIPA's studios next year for final mixes. Just something to have in my room at uni halls. I'll be using it for recording and mixing (at low levels) and for listening to music/watching films etc etc etc

I don't know if i even need monitors, will cds sound better on monitors or general computer speakers?

I'll be using them with my Edirol FA-101 firewire interface which has 1/4 inch (stereo "phones" out and L/R jacks on the back) and an optical out (which i doubt i'll get to use with my budget)

Any ideas?

Man, for that price, I think general computer speakers (like the Bose Companion 2) would be your best bet; I've been using these for the past 1 1/2 years, and while they're certainly not great, I've been listening to music on them almost every day that I've owned them, so I definitely think I know their sound and can make decent mixing judgments with them.

I might be able to persuade myself to spend a bit more. But not much more. Which monitors offer the best bang for my buck?
