Hmm....Opeth are probably my favourite band, but I also like Burzum, Ulver, Pink Floyd and Immortal.

Better artists than opeth..
There is a HELL OF A LOT of them.
Pick up the following albums, and judge for yourself, lemmings:
In terms of complexity, virtuosity and sheer playing ability (songs in brackets especially):
Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstasy (The Learning, 42147)
Death - Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, The sound of Perseverance
Martyr - Warp Zone (Virtual Emotions, The fortune Teller)

Hey Trapped, WTF??? You seem to hold some sort of resentment for Opeth. It seems that nearly every one of your post are degrading them. Musical taste are subjective. I've never heard any band as good as Opeth, and i've been following nearly every band recomendation on this board for around a year. Including yours. So quit trying to piss on Opeth. My favourite bands: SKYCLAD, OVERKILL, MANILLA ROAD, MORRIGAN, UDO / ACCEPT, SUBWAY TO SALLY, IRON MAIDEN...
opeth, in flames, testament, death, tool, iron maiden, dreadnaught (go the aussies!!), devolved are ok, brujeira, ff, anathema, iced earth.
I think that post was a bit moronic dude, carn, opeth ARE all that and more.

There are better bands, but none overall better at the things i love in music. None that i have found anyway.
But yeh, a band like Tool is as good except for the thoroughly boring guitar work, drum work is far more 'progressive' and interesting. Tool probably have better song structure as well, although id really leave that judgement until i heard them with a guitarist who actually did something.
Dreamtheater, heaps more talented musicians, but i just personally dont get into them as much, for my likings they are a bit too uninventive and unemtional (DT fans dont get mad, its just subjective).
Then theres a band like Faith No More who have a much broader range of song styles it seems, same line can be said about Mike Patton's vocals too.
A musician like Steve Vai is obviously far far better at guitar skills, and a lot better at odd time signatures and oddities and whatever. But yeh, on my scale Opeth beats him in songwriting skills easilly.
A band like Katatonia has more deep emotional effect on me, but the range of emotions they produce in me arent anywhere near as broad.
Genesis and Yes in their early days were obviously amazing bands and kick Opeth's ass in progressive songwriting skills from what ive heard.

I said that because I've saw SEVERAL troll posts from him getting at Opeth or other board members...he just doesn't seem to like Opeth at all, that's why I said it. If I'm wrong, I apologize.
Well, everyone knows that Trapped isn't the president of the 'Friends of Opeth' society, and he can be a pain sometimes, but I still think that when he's just saying that he prefers other bands to Opeth, people shouldn't fly off the handle.
It's pretty obvious he's trying to piss people off some of the time, but that's not really the point on this occasion. Apart from the 'lemmings' comment....
Plus you have to remember that he listed 'Days of the New' as a band he prefers over Opeth, so I think he deserves our sympathy, to be honest....
Andromeda - Extension of the Wish is awesome. Too bad mine already (somehow!) got scratched and the first song skips like hell.
There are bands I like more than Opeth, but for their style, they're they only band I really like. They have a unique style mixing the heaviness and acoustics with the growling/clean vocals...that's what attracted me to them. Within the past couple of weeks I've become a big fan.
