Better Artists then Opeth?

Some favorites:

Sinkadus (the greatest riff-writers!)
Ulver (though I disagree with the better than Opeth acoustic-wise comment, they seem to be more varied yet consistent in their output...)
Borknagar (Only The Archaic Course really stands above the level of Opeth for me...But the other are close to being as good, except the new one...which feels a little empty to me)
Arcturus (Musical brilliance! Far from the most technical band, but they create some of the most unique songs and atmospheres I've heard in metal. great guitarplaying and solos, awesome arrangements, and great vocals.)

Personally, I think that pretty much all these bands are as good, if not better than Opeth. It kinda depends on what mood I'm in. And there are other bands I like as much, I just don't feel I have enough material to judge properly (ie Anekdoten...)

It's all subjective, but for ME, Opeth is everything I could ever want in a band: melody, consistancy, depth, lyricism, instrumentation, and mood.

I've heard every band listed so far in this thread, and, while most are excellent, for me, Opeth is number one.

Some of my other favorite bands are: Children of Bodom, Katatonia, Agalloch, Lost Horizon, Entwine, and Rhapsody.

I'm generally a song person, not a band person. I just listen to songs, which is why I have 400+ CD's and not too many entire catalogues by one band. Same goes with my MP3 collection - all over the place.

I guess if I was to judge my favorite bands - I'll base it solely on the fact that I own every CD by that band, and it's a short list:

Opeth
Led Zeppelin
The Tea Party
Grip, Inc.

[ Well - there are a few that have only 1 CD, so that doesn't count to me. ]

There you go, that's it. And I try not to argue about bands, because there is almost an infinite number of musicians from all walks of music to choose from. I';d assume have ing a few songs from many bands for variety, then a collection of a handful of bands entire catalogues. And that's MY PREFERENCE, and I'm not knocking anyone else's musical tastes and listening habits.

Mine... Opeth is still at the top but more faves of mine are

Andromeda
Dream Theater (prolly second fave band)
Pain Of Salvation
Emperor
White Willow
Nevermore
Puya
Sevendust
Burzum
Soilwork
In Flames
Gardenian
Anathema
Katatonia
Arcturus
Borknagar
Everon

So, how is Eucharist better than Opeth. To me, they are just another In Flames clone.

Eucharist were one of the few that started that whole Melodic/Death thingy, for bands better thatn Opeth,

DARK TRANQUILLITY! IMO

Art is purely subjective - from creation to exhibition. Some call Mondrian art, some call it a waste of money.

To me, Opeth are the best musical artists. They're not the most technical band by far, but the soul of the music is far greater than nearly anything I've heard.

I'm not saying they're gods; I don't want Trapped on my ass, but I do respect and appreciate everything they've created. What They Are, in general, is not as important as What They've Become to me. Same goes for every band, and for every person.

Psychotic Waltz was always the band taking my bowels into a greater level.
Hmm...Fates Warning,Pain of Salvation have unique style, The Gathering and others.
But i believe Opeth are the best in what they do.

I haven't heard much in the same criteria or on the same level that Opeth play at, I know most of you laugh at me for this but my favourite band is, and will always be Stabbing Westward... not for musical complexity or anything but for the fact that it has sentimental value to me and helped me through alot of hard times in my life.

So aside from that, Opeth is so far the band that mixes everything perfectly... obviously they can't excell at the one style because they try to incorporate them all, but the mix they hit, that's just unique in itself.

So quit trying to piss on Opeth. You fucking asshole.

Well, at least my arguaments are backed up by my reccomendations... and like you said, personal taste is subjective... then why do you attack me for my tastes...??

...and trust me, i can beat you ten-fold on stupid flames, so don't go there, ass-neck. :)

Trapped you moron. You seem to be forgetting that Opeth combines all of those things in the same song, not just specialising in one!

...That statement was PARTICULARILY stupid, as Opeth is a specialist band, and quite a good one at that... but not the ends of the earth by any means...

He likes Opeth, he just doesnt love opeth, he also thinks Opeth fans are closeminded because we dont like what he likes. He has an ego problem you see. Mostly he just wants to create arguments and have fun though.

he he... right on gakkman... except the 'because we don't like what he likes', it's the other way round... i don't like what alot of you people like... :)

if you don't like Opeth, why the fuck are you posting on their official message board? Freak.

A musician like Steve Vai is obviously far far better at guitar skills, and a lot better at odd time signatures and oddities and whatever. But yeh, on my scale Opeth beats him in songwriting skills easilly.

hell yeah, good musician... but not too great at songwriting... opeth are decent songwriters, but they are stuck in a rut in terms of formula, and have started to repeat themselves...

Well, everyone knows that Trapped isn't the president of the 'Friends of Opeth' society, and he can be a pain sometimes, but I still think that when he's just saying that he prefers other bands to Opeth, people shouldn't fly off the handle.

Thankyou... :)

It's pretty obvious he's trying to piss people off some of the time, but that's not really the point on this occasion. Apart from the 'lemmings' comment....

actually, i just found an abandonware site with lemmings on it, and proceeded to download the original lemmings.. he he... it just seemed to 'fit'. :)

Plus you have to remember that he listed 'Days of the New' as a band he prefers over Opeth, so I think he deserves our sympathy, to be honest....

ahh, only in terms of acoustic guitaring...!! ...and take note that i only listed DOTN I !!

I'm not saying they're gods; I don't want Trapped on my ass, but I do respect and appreciate everything they've created.

... despite what you may think, I don't want ANYTHING to do with your ass

I also respect most of what opeth have done... But that means not that they are the end of the earth

well, opeth is my favorite band on earth, but i dont necessarily think they are the best band on earth. there are some things they are good at, and there are some things other bands are better at...and i guess that sums up everything that can be said for "best band" threads...

The only album that has come close to topping any of the Opeth albums is Puritanical Euphoric Misantrophia by Dimmu Borgir. I'm not talking of Dimmu as a band, but that one particular album. I happen to like it a lot, I can't find anything I wouldn't like in it. It's a perfect album, and since I still haven't quite figured Blackwater Park out, I think PEM is better.
