Black Metal Starter Kit

I think they're a very elite band. Their use of percussion is unparalleled and the melodies they come up with are more than catchy; they're powerful (Rhun)and they're the band best able to create an atmosphere with their music. I don't care if they're classified as 'middle earth' metal or 'Tolkien' metal. They're awesome. But of course one man's trash is another man's treasure...so to each his own. Respect.

Everybody in this thread chose Hvis Lyset Tar Oss for a Burzum album, but I'd suggest starting with Filosofem if you're new to the genre. And I'm not saying this because I like it better.

Venom - Welcome to Hell
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Hellhammer - Satanic Rites
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Sodom - Obsessed by Cruelty
Possessed - Seven Churches
Samael - Worship Him
Mayhem - Live in Leipzig
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Burzum - S/T
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
Dissection - The Somberlain

Probably something like:

Venom - Welcome to Hell
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon
Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun
Varathron - His Majesty at the Swamp

Summoning are not one of the hundreds bands who just try to do the saw raw black metal thing as everyone else. There isn't really anyone who sounds quite like them. The tolkien theme can be taken allegorically. Even Immortal sings about a fantasy realm; black metal doesn't have to stay with a narrow-minded set of allowed themes.

So, my update...

Here's the first wave:

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Darkthrone - Blaze in the Northern Sky
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Summoning - Dol Gulder
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Have just finally got them all in and have given a solid listen to the Summoning (it came in first) and think it's awesome.

The Bathory album - raw and kicks ass

Am sitting down tonight and tomorrow night with the headphones...

Now onto Darkthrone...

Keep the recommendations coming.
