Black Sabbath the Heaviest?

Well, in 1971 they were. LOL.

Actually, they may have been the heaviest band until "Sad Wings" was released in '76 (or was it '75?).

However, in my view, Slayer will always epitomize utter heaviness. Sure, there have been tons of death metal bands and such, but simply growling and playing sludge does not make one heavy!

Hehe, Slayer is definitely not the Heaviest band ever.

Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican

These albums are the heaviest albums ever concieved. That is all.

There are 5000 metal bands heavier than Black Sabbath. They were the heaviest band around when they started but then alot of bands got heavier and Black Sabbath got lighter into the '80s (Martin era... which I actually like the best but anyway..).

Heaviest literally... Nah.
Heaviest in a deep symbolic hippy sorta way... well, more so than literally.

So I get my Revolver Magazine, today for this month...
The 100 most heaviest bands...
Sabbath is ranked at number one.
I have to disagree, they were heavy, but don't you think another band should be on top?
Such a tough question.....

My answer would be Accept or Metallica. Both of those bands were so far ahead of their time.

I the sound of Heaviness probably lies in some sludgecore band that has a "singer" that uses voice box to half the pitch of his already low growl. This type of music I will openly say sucks.

The embodiment of heavy... wow... its hard to even wrap your mind around that. I won't even venture an opinion here because I simply can't substantiate it.

Hence, the reason why I stated "in my view".

Just as Dark Angel and the other band you mention are the heaviest in yours! :Spin:

They are a milestone is heaviness, since they are a milestone in HEAVY METAL (follow the idea? )

But as for heavy, like in wow, does anybody got the truck license plate:

Motorhead
Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine
Exciter
Coroner
Sabaton

and probably a zillion more (not counting Death, Grind bands) so pick your poison.

P.S One little detail "Heaven And Hell" still is the BEST HEAVY METAL album of ALL TIMES (and don't bother to argue ).

They might now be the heaviest nemore.....but they were. They are the pioneers of heavy metal. The first band to be pretty much just metal, and not blues and whatnot like Zeppelin. In my opinion Black Sabbath is the greatest band ever. Oh and Wyvern.....Im gonna have to argue....Master of Reality is the best heavy metal album of all times.

I think it all depends on your definition of heavy.

If you mean how heavily distorted the guitars and vocals are and how loud the drums are, then no Sabbath aren't the heaviest.
If you mean who's the most agressive band, then no.
If you mean who's the most powerful band, then no.
If you mean who gives of the most heavy "vibe", then yes. Sabbath are. As they were the first to deliver this "vibe" and although millions have coppied it, none can deliver it as the mighty Sabbath did. The crushing doom filled guitar riffs, tight rhythm section and eerie vocals are fuckin' heavy by anyone's standards!!

P.S. I'm talking about the Ozzy era here.. As none of the other singers could produce the eerie tone that Ozzy's famous for. Which added greatly to the overall heaviness of the band.

I consider them the Heaviest but in spirit not in present time... because let's face it if Sabbath never came about most of these bands nowadays wouldnt exist most likely and despite that some bands might be "heavier" now then sabbath is or were.. Sabbath has always came up with the most classic Heavy riffs that tests time itself 35 years later... most of these "heavy" bands today if not all of them wont be around that long and definetly will not be remembered as much... so yes Sabbath is the Heaviest in those terms... for all other terms Metallica's Ride the Lightning era would be the heaviest or Slayer from Reign in Blood to Seasons.. <shrugs> ... Hell you can argue that My Dying Bride and/or Candlemass are the Heaviest (and any other doom metal band who are coicindentally "heavyily" influenced by Sabbath).. but like someone already mentioned it depends on your definition of "Heavy" ...

They R definately not the Heaviest Band...well, not anymore anyway,but...
...Black Sabbath R the Alpha's of metal and no band past, present or future can ever fuck with that.

In my eyes, they deserve to B nr.1 on any God-damn list!

Different strokes 4 different Blokes... :OMG: So sad to hear you say that...
You never know, you might change your mind about that statement in years to come.

I actually just picked up the remastered versions of the first three Sabbath records, and, god-damn, these are heavy as f*ck!

Try to imagine hearing this for the first time in early 1970. The only TRULY heavy music yet available was the first two Zeppelin records. Deep Purple's "In RocK" was released later in 1970.
So, you drop the stylus on the debut, side 1, and you instantly hear the rainfall, the thunder, the eerie church-bells, then.....BOOM, the music begins. It's chilling! Lyrics dealing with darkness.....name ANY band that was this dark back in the day!
Sure, Zep & Purple had their dark moments, but never to this effect.

Then, after losing that 'dark edge' on the "Never Say Die" record, they completelly reinvent themselves with the awesome RJDio & release one of the genre's FINEST moments, "Heaven & Hell"!

In my view, the "heaviest records" ever released (based on the time they were first unleashed):

Led Zep I, Jan 1969
Led Zep II, fall 1969
SABBATH & PARANOID, both 1970
Deep Purple, In Rock, 1970
Judas Priest, Sad Wings 1976
Rainbow Rising 1976
Mercyful Fate, Melissa, 1983 (more for the vibe)
Metallica, Kill em All, 1983
Celtic Frost, Morbid Tales, 1984
Slayer, Hell Awaits, 1985
My Dying Bride, Turn Loose the Swans, 1993
