Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera

To me, there are only two things that make a band "cheesey"; their lyrics or their dress... but mainly, it's their lyrics. And to that end, I don't think it's a particular subject that in and of itself is "cheesey", rather the way it's spoken about.

That's the thing. I see it as how convincingly a band delivers their gear as the key to guaging whether it's 'cheesy' or not. You can blatantly tell when someone's taking the piss when they try and do the fantasy/gr1m/meedly-meedly thing. The way I see it, if your song can make me feel like I'm guarding an ancient bridge to a lost kingdom against the oldest dragon with a twelve-foot sword...bollocks to what you're wearing, how long your hair is or what model Strat you play, if you can do that you're a fucking star!

I find it ludicrous that black metal fans would deride power metal for its "cheesiness". Is there anything cheesier than the posing and posturing that goes on within the black metal subgenre?

Anyways, I think the cheese factor is irrelevant as long as you enjoy the music. I love Symphony X. Their music is brilliant. I would prefer they not sing about being seduced by undead hags in the middle of ancient cemetaries... but I can certainly accept that level of cheese as long as the music is good.

On topic: this album is gay and lying. Mostly just gay. Read my whole opinion here. Short version - ATTWS rules, the rest sucks.

One of my Swedish ebuddies tells me he read an interview with BG where they basically yeah "Yeah, that album sucked." Well, more diplomatically, but the thrust of it was that they wanted to make something more like Imaginations or Nightfall, and failed, and would be trying to recapture some of their OLD old stuff for the next album. Woot, sez I.

black metal is inherently cheesy because it deigns to speak for a demigod, or Satan if you will; whatever posesses someone to articulate what they couldn't possibly know? And as Satan is a product of Christianity, why in the world would any of these metalheads, many of whom scorn the Christian faith, buy into it?
I've often wondered the same thing.

I couldn't agree more. While the better acts in both genres typically pull it off with a minimal to null cheese factor, the lesser bands in both genres are equally cheesey.
