I'm looking for stuff like Alcest's Le Secret EP, the band Nadja, or Jesu. Something that incorporates shoegaze, drone, or gothic (not cheesy) elements into the music and isn't overtly hostile.

Extreme vocals are alright, hell, occasional blastbeats are alright, I'm just looking for something that touches on a variety of moods that most metal bands do not experiment with. I'm mainly looking for stuff that breaks the conventions of metal and is appealing on a level that is extremely unique.

edit: oh yeah, I already know of The Gathering and The 3rd and The Mortal. They're fine, but please don't recommend stuff like Within Temptation or other over-the-top gothic tripe.

btw guys, I changed the topic name to "subdued experimental metal" even though it doesn't show up that way on the topic index.

Boris-Flood.

That it is strange mixture of shoegaze and light droning. Very blissful.

.........oh and Turn On The Bright Lights and Antics era Interpol:).

been an Interpol fan for four years, great band. I'll check out Boris...I'm pretty amazed I never have.

and Ozzman, thanks for the Katatonia rec, but I'm already familiar with them and Brave Murder Day is the only album after Dance of December Souls that I like. I hate their newest stuff.

The shit after BMD is more subdued wtf :err:

They went in more of a rock direction after BMD, but I still find their entire discography (minus TD, since I haven't heard it yet) to be amazing

It's just a bit too rock-ish for what I'm looking for, and it's not really even the kind of rock I enjoy (mostly post-punk/indie rock).

I can't stand the vocals on My Dying Bride except for some of the earliest stuff (Symphonaire et Infernuswhatever is the only one that comes to mind). Agalloch comes close to what I'm looking for with some of the stuff on their latest album.

You guys can just ignore this topic because I really have no idea how to describe the sound I'm looking for and I don't like saying "no, that's not what I'm looking for, sorry" over and over because I just look like an asshole.

So thanks for your help and sorry I couldn't be more specific.

Sun of the Sleepless - Tausend Kalte Winter (mainly for the track Spring '99)

You should also check out the first two Empyrium albums.

Mort Divine will second me while I second my recommendation on Boris-Flood. Its really that good.

Also the new Jesu record, Conquer.

Well, I put Jesu as a reference point in my original post to let people know that was something I was already familiar with, but thanks nonetheless.

I'm having computer problems right now but when I figure out what the hell is going on I will check out some of the bands mentioned that I'm not already familiar with, namely Boris, Ved Buens Ende, and Sun of The Sleepless.

Saturnus - unbelievable doom. Get their latest release.
Pain of Salvation - Prog metal. Amazing stuff...

download the song "Erwachen" by Hel. that's the vibe you're after, aye?

I don't know if doom is far too heavy for what you want, but if it's not then I second Saturnus, Paradise Lost, and MDB.

The INLAND EMPIRE soundtrack has got a great track called "Ghost Of Love" that is by the director David Lynch. Maybe I can upload it for you. It has that low key vibe.
