blissful/peaceful/subdued metal

Mort Divine will second me while I second my recommendation on Boris-Flood.

I will too; it's amazing. Not to be missed by fans of chill-out music with amazing climaxes!

I also second Mort's Tausend Kalte Winter rec...great 2 song thing.

Agalloch comes close to what I'm looking for with some of the stuff on their latest album.

October Falls - The Streams of the End
Empyrium - A Wintersunset

maybe Hypocrisy - Hypocrisy and something by Christ Agony or Morrigan or Mael Mórdha.

You guys can just ignore this topic because I really have no idea how to describe the sound I'm looking for and I don't like saying "no, that's not what I'm looking for, sorry" over and over because I just look like an asshole.

just list "artist - song title" of a couple songs that are exactly what you love and wish you had more of...

Examples of what I'm looking for: Stuff like Colour Haze (not really metal, I know), Jesu, Alcest, Nadja, Umbra Nihil, Fleurety's Min Tid Skall Komme, The 3rd and The Mortal's Tears Laid in Earth (for it's uniqueness and jazzy feel), Neurosis and Isis (in the way they hold back a lot to build tension).

So it's not really a common "sound" or "theme" per se, but a common approach. I'm going to change the name of the topic (if I still can) to simply "subdued experimental metal". Metal that doesn't go right for the juggular but hangs in the air and slowly evolves and/or occasionally explodes.

My Dying Bride is not what I'm interested in, I really can't stand that band, especially the singer. Early Paradise Lost is good, but not really what I'm looking for here. Also, Draconian falls into the same uncomfortable area as MDB for me.

I suppose Agalloch and Empyrium fit the criteria here, so if you want to recommend more bands like them, go ahead I suppose as it can't hurt, but for some reason I don't feel like they quite fit with the other recommendations, maybe because they're so familiar to me that they don't seem experimental anymore

edit: I really liked Flood...does anyone know where I can buy a non-import copy though? I really can't spend $35 + shipping on one cd.

You listened to it? Download right?

Southern Lord might reissue it or at least I hope they do.

Yeah, I downloaded it. It's too expensive to buy atm but if I can find it for a decent price I'd buy it. I would check eBay, but buying off eBay isn't really supporting the artist anymore than downloading is, since you're merely paying someone else for an already purchased copy of the album, so I don't see the point in that.

I checked out Ved Buens Ende and it wasn't really doing anything for me, so I'm going to wait and try again at a better time. Definitely experimental though, so good recommendation there. I will give it more tries.

Mortifera is a pretty spot on recommendation. Unfortunately, I'm already acquainted with them. Same with Peste Noire, but I will have to check out this other band who I have never of.

edit: I know it's trendy and all to say this, but the French scene right now is just fucking awesome.

where does the OP specify 'dark'?

I never usually listen to Pelican, but they are an EXCELLENT band for just... relaxing. I normally set Pelican as my alarm.
Great for waking up to. Except maybe Drought.
