Blood Meridian

The band of a friend of mine: Mr Man, i saw them live several times and liked them.

Check out their site www.mister-man.com they're fun :)
There are some downloadable songs in the music section.

EDIT: for the italians: do listen to Atroci if you want to have fun, they make fun of metal, there's a song about black metal Voglio vederti morire that is just hilarious :D www.gliatroci.com/old-index.htm

WATCH THESE VIDEOS AND WONDER HOW IS THAT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE. This guy is Immense. Probably the fastest guitarist Ive ever seen. He's so accurate with everything he does... it's quite sickening really. If Im ever that good Ill be very very very proud of myself.
Do yourself a favour and never ever ever ever ever ever ever aim to play like this guy. Quick? sure... but what else is it?

I haven't seen too much faster than this guy, but i've seen a few other videos of people playing similarly quick stuff (some with a bit more musical value, some with less, some with more tricks, some with funnier facial expressions, etc). And almost all of them are emotionless, a few slow notes followed by a run of ridiculously fast notes. Watching these videos does make the jaw drop for a while, but it's a sport rather than music.. i would quite simply be completely embarrassed to play like that.

Considering that you're on a Dark Tranquillity board i'm sure you realise that music is about expression.. how much expression can you get into a note when it lasts for such a tiny moment? Did this guy's playing make you feel anything other than amazement? The true masters are those who can take a slow run of notes and truly express what they're feeling. It's the subtleties that are important, complete control over vibratos, slides, bends, dynamics, etc etc.. and quite frankly this guy sounded fairly bad whenever he played slower stuff.

Speed in some circumstances can add a new means of expression, but it's use as an artistic tool is very limited and in my honest opinion the effort to get that fast is far better spent on learning some song writing skills or such.

And hmmm, from the videos of this guy that i saw he didn't seem to be good at much at all, im not sure if a guitarist like Vai is quicker than this guy but Vai is certainly doing a LOT more interesting things (like playing entire solos using the whammy bar... and, well everything).. this guy doesnt even get close to competing with Vai.

there's my $0.02 :p

Me and my friend always argue about this. I think he deserves respect for being so skilled, and probably could write more expressive stuff if he tried. All his playing really does is blow my mind, and entertains me in an awe inspiring sense. I admit I couldnt listen to this for enjoyment, but I wouldn't mind being able to play at that speed so precisely. He makes sweeping look far too easy. :erk:

At the moment I'm still aiming to get better and better, and as I get better my songs and solo abillity get better too. If I ever was as good as him alot of things that I struggle with would become effortless, so it would be a good thing.

All I did was comment on his speed anyway. I never said he was making good music.

have your $0.02 back.

Certainly skill is important to a degree, i just think few people would have any real use for speed of the level displayed in those vids. And i understand you were just commenting on his speed, if my post seemed attacking towards you then i apologise, it wasn't meant to be that way. Mostly i was saying things you'd already be aware of, people say they really want to play as quick as those kind of guys but realistically when it really comes to it they'd be far happier with a fraction of that speed and more skill in other areas.

And hey, the reason i jumped in and downloaded those vids straight away is because i get enjoyment from watching them too, but i just would never want to spend so much effort just to be able to do that. I have a number of other videos sitting on this harddrive to drop my jaw to as well.. like Michael Angelo playing stuff with his hand over the fretboard instead of under.. but i just don't necessarily respect someone whose biggest selling point is a skill, rather than substantial material which the skill allows him to produce. Does that make sense?

yeah that all totally makes sense.

I have the Michael angelo video of Speed kills. I couldnt stop laughing when he did that alternate either side of the neck thing. It made such a stoopid sound. His upside down sweeps and legato's are just insane.

But yeah, that degreee of skill is unneccesary, unless you're in dragonforce (they do all the michael Angelo upside down stuff when playing live and it's soooo entertaining). I downloaded a video of Henry Li recording one of the dragonforce solo's for one of there studio albums and he actually did some of the parts upside down :err:... how pointless is that?

@hyena: :D Atroci are the funniest thing ever, i saw them live and laughed for days. I recommend "voglio vederti morie" and "guerrieri del metallo"

I die everytime i hear these lines:
"...adoro i teschi, colleziono cadaveri, ti trito col mulinex,ti amputo gli arti, ti stronco con la mannaia, ti uccido i parenti,ti stupro la cagna, ti mangio il canarino, ti butto il pesce nel cesso e poi mi confesso. messe nere malati di mente sacrifici umani, viva il male, viva il diavolo sono satanico, cadaverico, necrofilo e putrefatto, riviste pornografiche, necrofagia decomposizione,riesumazione..."

my DT website kan be found at www.dark-tranquillity.tk

cheers,

bas

p.s. i have an exclusive 10" inch mind's i cardboard cd ltd. edition, does anyone wanna trade?

@SlayerOfTheWord: Obviously you have mistaken a bit, because it´s crystal-clear that Kalmah is more like a mixture of dark ambient and spacejazz-orgy, stained with 80´s euro-disco. Made in extremely progressive, yet blasphemous vein of course.
Would you like to trade your mind´s i vinyl to my Imafu King - Elitist -vinyl. Only 115 copies were printed, so it´s kinda rare.

Kalmah really sounds nothing like DT :(.

Nick

to what KALMAH i have been listening to then?! i think there are many similarities! it sounds more like children of bodom, true, but listen carefully to those melodies en dark passages, they are very alike the old tranquillity songs (gallery). however, all three bands are superb!!!

cheers!
