The closest band to Opeth that I have heard, yet they are their own sound.

I purchased a cd the other day for 4.99 ~ which was a compilation of Metal Blade groups: Borknagar, Opeth, Nevermore, Theater of Tragedy, Sentenced, etc.

The song Ocean's Rise by Borknagar was on there...it blew me away.

I will definitely be purchasing these guys.

Yeah, they're ok...

I wouldn't class them anywhere near Opeth though.

I've got Empericism, and it's pretty good. The musicianship is great, and the vocals are great, but for some reason the drums are really tinny and lightweight...

Not a bad album though.

Well I am only going by the one song that I have heard and I must say that the drums do not sound "tiny" on that cut.

But thanks for your opinion, maybe I will check out more of their stuff first before buying.

Borknagar are great. they aren't similar to Opeth though.

I think they've improved over the years. Vintersorg is good, but Grutle Kjellson is better. Vintersorg's clean vocals are actually similar to Grutle's clean vocals. It'd be cool if Grutle sang on a Borknagar album........yeah. . .

I've long been a Borknagar fan... and first of all, the drums on Empericism are not tinny at all...
Asgeir is a really great drummer, and he absolutly know what he is doing!
and compering Borknagar with Opeth? well, that is nothing I would have done... but well.... they are both progresiv and use both clean and 'unclean' vocals...
and if you are interested, I wrote a little reweiv(in here) from when Borknagar playd here in trondheim... it is probably far down in the thread list somewhere...

yea ive got empiricism and some of songs of their older shit on my computer and it fucking kicks ass. try listening to empiricism while driving at night down a desolate road. its so great. i wanted to pull over and cry (well not really but still :))

I only listened to one song by those guys and I still say that they sounded similiar to Opeth in that particular track.

The beginning melody sounded like Bleak.

And after reading everybody's opinion about these guys, no doubt I will be purchasing Borknagar soon.

Thanks.

Borknagar rocks!! They are my favorite band only second to Opeth. Muically, Borknagar is spectacular. I love listening to one of their cd's for the first time because you never know what the next song will be like. I just recently got their self-titled cd and wow what a difference. That cd is incredible if you haven't listened to yet. I like the direction they have taken since then though, and I can't wait for their future works of art!

well, Quintessence are a really great album! I would say it is the best album from Borknagar, I think it even beats Empericism... but well, not musically, only vocaly... 'cuz i gotta admit I would rather have Simen in Borknagar then Vintersorg :\
I'm a big Vintersorg fan to, but I would rather have them apart...
and the Borknagar stuff with Garm on vocals are just great!
