Born Of Osiris Studio Update 2

I've been recording bands for 21 years and have many releases under my belt of all styles and know how to run a real analog console, cut 2" tape, use outboard gear like real engineers do.

Sadly, unless the 2" tape is radioactive none of these things imbue you with the power to control other peoples opinions. By the time I was 21, I'd managed to work out that not everyone would like me or the things I do - and I spent several of those years shitting and pissing in my own clothes. If, after 21 years of doing something *as an adult* you haven't realised that, people not liking your mixes is the least of you problems.

Seriously, be the bigger man. Instead of engaging in an entirely pointless pissing contest, shrug your shoulders, strive to do better, and try to make your next mix the one that changed BrianHood's opinion.

Trust me all on this forum I don't want to start a pissing match between who's mixes sound better and blah blah blah. I get my panties in a bunch when I read all these new kids being called gods for demos that yes sound good sonically but have a big lack of any human feel to the mixes or are very lifeless thats all. As a older (hate saying that word lol) engineer I have seen a ton of guys come and go that followed the trends of how albums should sound by using the same gear or settings another guy is using or can just copy settings from stock gear thats very ez to do and takes no talent at all, but the guys that still are making great records are the ones that listen to the band and really take the time to craft a bands identity. I just don't hear that anymore so myself and studio team do try and make that happen for each band coming through the studio doors and also try and work with the limited budgets bands have, that's all.

So I want to ask this question to everyone. What was the one band or album that really thrown you back and you said to yourself holy fuck that production really made that band. It can be anything metal to whatever.

So let's all get along here and I really hope everyone will enjoy the new BOO cd when it comes out in 2011 as much as I have making the album. I will say the band is spot on, drums and guitars are going to be massive sounding, we spent a good deal of time making sure every vocal take, drum hit, and lead was perfect in every way so I would say this album is going to be best material to date from BOO and what I did respect in the BOO camp is the guys are really taking into account to give the fans the album they want to hear, I thought that was very cool on the bands part!

So if our mixes or recordings are so "terrible" why are BOO tracking and my studio booked out for the next 6 months with label work? Just saying!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's because:
1. - Things didn't work out with Joey Sturgis/Misha Mansoor due to scheduling conflicts...
2. - They don't have much of a budget for the album and needed somewhere local to get tracking done. (You're local for them.)

Did you use axefx on the album or was that just to monitor through while tracking?

We used a Axe Fx for all the guitars, we made some custom patches with the editor for all the rhym guitars then made some new ones for the leads. There are a few different lead tones throughout the album.
Got to love that axe fx! I just dumped my custom Bogner Uber as I'm tracking more now with the Axe Fx. It's scary how good that box sounds!

I'm not at liberty and it's not my place to discuss the bands business on how or why they are tracking at my studio. If the band wants to clear up anything then thats up to them. Check the sevenstring forum sites Lee is on their a lot maybe ask him his side of the story.

Bass too?

No we ran a few channels, one direct into the SSL console, one into a Sansamp then another into a older Neve channel strip. We have a PCP box that can run one signal into three different outputs that is wired into the patch bay. We tried at first a signal into the Axe Fx but did not find it sat well with the big guitar tones and the drums we got.

Very cool of you to chime in on the board!

I will say, that bass tone is monsterous! Totally huge. Everything from the camera is sounding pretty great so far, and that's just from the cheap camera mic. You mentioned that you worked on every drum hit, so it is true that the drums on the album are going to be real drums?

Nah, they have a SCHOEPS attached to the videocamera :Spin:

LOL I wish, nope its a little Kodak HD camera we use at the studio for promo shots the band has been using for the youtube videos. Have to say its really nice for audio and video. I got it because it's waterproof and you how band guys get in the studio!

Thanks for the props, the custom Trick kit you saw on the video that is the studios house drum kit we are using.

Just wondering, what outboard gear have you been using in the process?

Also, did you record any of the instruments to 2" tape?

Thanks for all the info.

No 2" tape, I haven't fired up my machine in years for a session. Tape is getting harder to get I think, but if budgets are there I will record to 2" for the kick, snare and bass tracks for sure. Some of the guitars where ran into a Chandler LTD2 and the vocals where with a SM7 and a U87 into a EL8 then direct into the SSL AWS 900 console. Also the keys where feed out of pro tools and into the SSL to add some punch.

We are still tracking but in final stages so we are still going to run some tracks into additional outboard gear before going out to mix.
