I have a few friends at work who are intrigued with my 'other job' & want to hear this band that I never shut up about (especially after this weekend!), so I told them I'd put together a sampler for them. I have some ideas for what songs I want to include, & I thought it'd be fun to ask ya'll too..so now that we have another whole cd worth of music to include, what songs would you put on a SymX sampler?

You can have two regular 80 minute cd-rs, burned as audio not mp3..let's hear what your ideal two disc sampler would be. :)

1 - The Eyes of Medusa
2 - Divine Wings of Tragedy
3 - Set The World on Fire (The Lie of Lies)
4 - The Relic
5 - Through the Looking Glass
6 - Evolution
7 - Egypt
8 - Communion and The Oracle
9 - Masquerade '98
10 - The Edge of Forever

(is it the CD full already? :D)

Disc one: The whole New Mytholgy suite
Disc two:
Smoke and Mirrors
Eyes of Medusa
Sins and Shadows
Accolade 1
Accolade 2
Awakenings
Damnation Game
Oculus ex Inferni
Set the World on Fire

Not too sure how long this is, but in no particular order:

Divine Wings
Rediscovery
Paradise Lost
Winter's Dream
Walls of Babylon
Accolade 1 & 2
King of Terrors
Edge of Forever
Through The Looking Glass
Eyes of Medusa
Whispers
Domination
Egypt
Orion The Hunter
Candlelight Fantasia
Fallen

Oculus ex Inferni
Set the world on fire
Paradise Lost
Inferno
The Bird-Serpent War
On the Breath of Poseidon
Egypt
The Death Of Balance
Smoke And Mirrors
Of sins and shadows
Sea of Lies
Out of the ashes
Accolade 1
Accolade 2
Masquerade '98
The Damnation Game
The Edge Of Forever

In my opinion that would be a good cd to introduce someone to SX (if it isn' t too big ). Divine Wings is too difficult to listen the first times...

Accolade 2

For just one disc of 80 minutes I would say....

Set the World on Fire (Apparently everyone's new "commercially" favorite; it's a good opener)
Inferno (The riffage in this one will get people pumped)
The Eyes of Medusa (An older song; hard and melodic)
Fallen (Better than Evolution IMO; but one of the two would fit)
Of Sins and Shadows (People seem to like it alot; a well rounded song)
Paradise Lost (This will send them straight to Heaven)
The Walls of Babylon (Russell's Halford-like vocals in the pre-chorus will make them all cream...trust me, it happens)
Lady of the Snow (A really good, under appreciated song; it'll give them a break from the metalness)
The Accolade (If you wish to continue the softness, this would be perfect I think; a great song)
The King of Terrors (A damn good song, very catchy, very likeable...and heavy)
The Odyssey (This all depends on who's receiving the CD. Many people can't swallow the idea of a near-25 minute song...but if the song is good enough, which obviously it is, they might think this is an absolute masterpiece)

With the addition and/or deletion of one or two to keep it within the given time, I'd say this isn't too bad. Pretty well rounded with old and new stuff on it.

i don't know...

1)Damnation Game
2)Smoke and Mirrors
3)set the world on fire
4)domination
5)walls of babylon
6)of sins and shadows
7)sea of lies
8)out of the ashes
9)accolade
10)accolade 2

those are pretty much just my favourites

Alright this is the perfect "first time listen" playlist.

Disc 1
1. The Walls of Babylon 8:16 (not their best song, but a fucken excellent opener if you ask me!)
2. Transcendence 0:38 (since TWoB is a fadeout track this sets the mood perfectly for the next song.)
3. Rediscovery (Part II) - The New Mythology 11:57 (if you're any good at editing, make it so that it goes smoothly from Transcendence into this. it's a prefect combination. really. just listen to it )
4. Egypt 7:05 (awesome track that has the perfect intro to "break away" from the previous 12-minute song. also, the piano outro makes for an excellent start for the next song.)
5. Paradise Lost 6:32 (it's gay with all the fadeout outros on Paradise Lost, but they're great when making mixed albums, because you can basically mix in any song following one of these)
6. Of Sins and Shadows 4:58 (just a great heavier song sandwiched between some softies)
7. The Accolade 9:51 (because)
8. The Serpent's Kiss 5:03 (again, just to separate soft and heavy with a good track. also it'd be nice with some more Paradise Lost if they'll ever see them live)
9. The Accolade II 7:05 (because)
10. Lady of the Snow 7:07 (soft)
11. Wicked 5:32 (heavy)

~80 minutes, cba counting but it's not more at least.

Disc 2

1. Revelation (Divus Pennae ex Tragoedia) 9:17
2. The Divine Wings of Tradgedy 20:42
3. Through the Looking Glass 13:05
4. The Odyssey 24:07

less than 80 minutes aswell

Disc 1:
1. Prelude
2. Evolution
3. Of Sins and Shadows
4. Domination
5. Communion and the Oracle
6. King of Terrors
7. Smoke and Mirrors
8. Accolade I
9. Accolade II
10. Awakenings
11. Lady of the Snow
12. The Walls of Babylon

Disc 2:
1. Through the Looking Glass
2. Rediscovery pt. 1
3. Rediscovery pt. 2
4. Divine Wings of Tragedy
5. The Odyssey

Disk 1:

Oculus Ex Inferni
Set the World on Fire
Paradise Lost
Walls of Babylon
The Sacrifice
Inferno
Incantations of the Apprentice
King of Terrors
The Turning
Fallen
Egypt
The Death of Balence/Lacrymosa
Of Sins and Shadows
Out of the Ashes
Smoke and Mirrors
Damnation Game

Disk 2:

Revelation
The Odyssey
Rediscovery Pts. 1 + 2
Through the Looking Glass
The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Accolade 1
Accolade 2

I agree, great 1st disk, which will likely get them hooked, and with time they could listen to the 2nd disk. If you are not used to prog, the 2nd disc would be terrible, because its too much for someone to handle. The first disc is a great intro for the 2nd one. You can't go from listening to Metallica, Pantera, and Slayer to the Odyssey, it just doesn't work like that. Inferno is what got me hooked to Symphony X.

Disc 1:

Oculus Ex Inferni
Set The World On Fire
Paradise Lost
The Odyssey
Evolution
Fallen
Communion And The Oracle
Bird-Serpent War / Cataclysm
Egypt
Death Of Balance / Lacrymosa
Absence Of Light
Fool's Paradise
Rediscovery Pt 2

Disc 2:

Smoke And Mirrors
Through The Looking Glass
Sea Of Lies
The Accolade
The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
Candlelight Fantasia
The Damnation Game
Dressed To Kill
The Edge Of Forever

V is definately the best overall mix of Symphony X though, just that album in it's entirety would suffice.

CD 1
For catch factor because most people aren't going to try and get into songs

Accolade 2
Sea of Lies
Accolade 1
Church of the Machine
Fallen
Out of the Ashes
Candlelight Fantasia
Awakenings
In the Dragon's Den
Of Sins and Shadows
Set the World on Fire
Eve of Seduction
Paradise Lost
maybe even Serpents Kiss

Haven't been any posts here in months, but I'm putting in my ten cents worth anyway. I am not looking at times to fit into CD's, don't have them here. These are the songs that have "grabbers" at the start that make me want to keep listening:

Fallen (first one I heard, still my favorite)
Wicked (that drawn-out singing style slays me here)
Eve of Seduction
Paradise Lost
Candlelight Fantasia (just too surprising and different to exclude)
Serpent's Kiss (mainly for that smoking guitar solo; OMG)
Domination
Revelation (so original, unexpected hooks and riffs)
The Odyssey (got to have this one)

1. Occulus/Set the World on Fire (it's just a great opening... for concerts too)
2. Serpent's Kiss (it's catchy, do these people listen to metal? I'm assuming no, so this would probably be good)
3. Egypt (a sample of their epic nature)
4. Sea of Lies (gotta have some classics)
5. Fallen or Evolution (a good rocker or two)
6. Accolade II (it's amazing and a little more accessible than the 1st)
7. Inferno (gotta have one more ass-kicker)
8. Through the Looking Glass (need I say more?)
9. Odyssey (though you may want to put this at the beginning to blow their mind from the start, you HAVE to have this one the CD)

I did the one disc format, but I think this would give a great overview.

EDIT: ACTUALLY!!!! I'd go with Phanto's list. Good stuff.

EDIT PART DEUX: FUCK!!! I just realized this was almost a year old. Oh well...
