Building your own Vs. Buying a stock guitar?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the IM's earlier tonight. It's always cool talking to you.

I almost always replace pick-ups. I usually don't like the stock pick-ups in any guitar and so I generally replace them. I used to do it myself, but I got spoiled by having techs all the time to do it for me. Now I can't remember how to wire them!

I'm considering putting atleast one new pickup in my axe, it currently has the standard Jackson ones, and having spent a few years with it, I'm getting annoyed with the lack of sustain on them. Time for something a little more sensitive, I think.

And no, I won't be doing it myself, I don't have the faintest idea :err:

who in here leaves guitar stock, or plays dr. frankestrat with them? i will admitt i love changing guitar parts around. i hate stock pickups and shit.

james do you like floyd trems, or fixed bridges. the last guitar i knew you were playing was a ibanez S classic with a fixed bridge and the same pickups that john petrucci was using on his guitars.

what kind of jackson guitar do you have?

Kelly XLR to be specific - y'know with the weird shape, bit sticking out the top, bit sticking out the bottom and curved kinda like a Nike logo :D. And it's metallic green, which looks cool. Floyd Rose on it aswell.

Just to add on. I got a new Jackson in january. Something about that brand seems to just fit me all the way around. It's a DKMG, black forest, alder body, with the emg hz pickups. I love it and being a poor ass, getting something like this really was a treat and a appreciate the ownership. I am thinking about changing out the pickups though. I don't like the fact of changing out the 9 volt battery when it dies out. Don't know what could work instead and I'm not really sure what I could use for the "extra" knob thats used for the emg - hzs.

any suggestions?

i dislike emg pickups. i only liked them because i use to see jeff hanneman, tom araya, and kerry king using them. i would say put a push pull pot in that extra knob and split a coil on a humbucker, but you have to find a humbucker you can do that too. jacksons always sound good with seymour duncans. i would recommend the seymour pickups that were in the marty freidman model jackson kelly, it kicked ass.

here are a few pics of my guitars

ok... Thanks for the info, testamentnut! A online friend of mine Santiago of Aghora suggested pickups called Dimarzios or something close to that and his sound is amazing. Do you or anyone else know about those pickups? what exactly is it that you don't like about the EMGs?... something is a miss with them. Although the distortion is ok the clean tone is alittle... Just not crystal clear and seems off. I don't know much tech shit about guitar pickups and wiring so the push pull pot thing I'm clueless about. oh and the pictures didn't show up for some reason.

later on

 Oh :spin:

I dunno, that's what the label on it says, it looks just like any other Kelly I've ever seen. Although, it was alot more expensive than the regular variety, so......

Hmmmm, I could be sitting on something fantastic, and not even know it :err:
