My guess is....if you're new to the Symphony X experience, you'll be getting their entire catalog before too long, and telling all your friends about what you found. Welcome to the Forum.

You are in for:

Some Pantera-esque moments, one very very epic song, a couple ballads, and some good playing

You will also hear a very guitar laden record where the other instruments are pushed back unfairly. The drums sound a bit compressed, and I have a hard time hearing the bass. Russ uses his "angry" voice a bit too much instead of his smooth voice imo. The songs will also seem very familiar if you know their other catalogue because some parts are very similar to the older songs.

It is a good release, but not their best. I only listen to it once in a while, where I prefer to listen to Divine Wings or Twilight.

I think you should just wait and form your own opinion...there are mixed emotions about Odyssey. See I could tell you that Odyssey is the best album ever and I love it more than any other, it is kick as heavy with beautiful melodies, but you might feel more like Soul of Ice does. but whatever :)

I'm pretty new to Symphony X (and metal in general)... I had heard a few of their more well known songs before, and then I purchased Odyssey a few weeks ago.... OH MY GOD! I am hooked, and if it is true that this is not their best album then I am going to loose my mind when I hear it for myself! Whether it is their best or not... if you don't like it on some level then there is something critically wrong with you (IMHO)! :p
