I want a new camera. dunno what to get.
I've used the mini Canons for a while now.
Should I stick with them? or maybe try out a Sony?
I want to take good pictures, but not have to pay $4,599 for a camera.
Also I really want the HD video capability
Help me Obi Wan. You're my only hope

Anything more specific you can say about what you want? Do you want a DSLR?

I personally like the Canon G series, because they're kind of like the missing link between point & shoot cameras and SLRs. The quality is great, but they're a lot more portable/stowable than an SLR.

pretty much point and shoot.
do not want to spend over $200
My Canon (powershot SD630) is a good camera, but not exactly good enough

My ol' Sony DSC-W55 (the now broken one) takes HD videos. You've at least seen my Absu videos...those are pretty good, and I didn't have HD mode on for those or for most of my videos really. I like Sony a lot, and it took four years of constant abuse for a crucial button to break. A camera like that runs between $150-$175, maybe a little more. Unfortunately my next camera will not be a Sony because I can't afferd it right now. Next I'm getting a Fujifilm JV100.

Scratch that. I lucked out and am getting a couple of my textbooks super cheap, so I'll have more to spend on a camera. This will be the one. Goooo Sony! You can upload music to it, which is definitely not necessary, but this seems to be a badass lil camera. And HD video, of course!

this thread is awesome because my camera got full of sand at the beach yesterday....I'm going with the reccomendations herè!

I definitely recommend Sony. They're a good all around point and shoot. Olympus makes some pretty good ones, as well as Pentax is starting to come up the ladder. Nikon is one of the better point and shoots, but you want to be careful with them. I suggest Sony.

Some Sony cameras have the Carl Zeiss lens, others just have the Sony lens. My old one, and the new one I'm getting, both have the Carl Zeiss lens. I'm not sure if it makes much difference since I haven't used a non-Carl Zeiss Sony. But I do know my old camera takes very awesome pictures under the right circumstances.

Gonna give another shout out to Sony. I have a DSC W7 and it was the camera I used up until I got my dSLR. I still take the Sony out when I don't feel like lugging the big one around.
Overall, I think Sony products are great. I've always had Sony decks in my cars and they last for years. I just got a Sony Walkman 16GB mp3 player at the beginning of summer and I dropped it in a creek about a week after getting it. A few days later it was back to functioning 100% properly.

I can't recommend a Sony camera enough.

yeah was going to say that... for it's price the powershot 1400 (or ixus 130 as it's known as here) is pretty much the best one you can get... the quality on both are great... I think the only big difference between them is basically that the Canon has a couple more functions than the Sony. I don't think you really can go wrong with either one really, but I've generally only had good experiences with the Canon.

What about a bridge camera? Not quite a DSLR, but not quite a point and shoot. Still too big to just put in your pocket, though. I was planning to get one soon, to have in addition to my point and shoot. But that dream has been squashed with the death of my buddy cam, as replacing the point and shoot takes precedence.

I was going to get this one made by GE. Pretty inexpensive for what it is, and the reviews are mostly good.
