Hi

I'm a 16 year old from Sweden that listens to alot of music and play alot of games. And I'm currently making a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 montage, and I would really really like to use the Children of Bodom - Downfall song in it.

So i wonder if I am allowed to to that.

I've done a video before with a slipknot song, but the song was removed because it was copyrighted (and I didn't have permission to use it but i didn't know you had to have that either). At that time i didn't know you couldn't use the song (I had written the name of the band and the name of the song at 3 diffrent places so I was not hiding who made the song or anything) but still i thought i would be able to use it since you can't download the song or anything and a lot of people are using other music in videos.

I won't be angry (hehe ) if you turn down and say I can't use it but I thought I could give it a shot!

Thanks for my time!

wow, times are fucked up when you have to email a record label about using a song in a youtube montage for a videogame haha, especially if you give credit. That's something I'll never understand.

Well I have never ever heard of anyone getting their video removed cause of an song in it..Do you know how fucking many videos with songs in it there is on Youtube? It's sick..must be a couple of thousands being uploaded every day too. And I think it's retarded to remove your video aswell. Just upload the montage with the song.

To the people complaining about not being allowed to use songs in videos: do you think it's right that people can then go to the youtube video and listen to the song for free? There are entire albums uploaded to youtube and you certainly can download/record the music.

Not removed, but i have seen numerous cases where the audio has been disabled in a video due to copyright claims, happens a lot. Same way that shows and movies get pulled.

Well I guess you know the game World of Warcraft for example? There is ATLEAST 10 000+ montage videos with many different songs and I never see those getting copyright claims, and also, do you know how huge of a promotion it is for bands when people use their song in videos? I know tons of people getting to like bands just through montage videos. Bands should be happy, they are in no way losing money on it in any way, just free promotion.

Agreed aswell. maybe roughly 70% of artists have already learned their lesson and picked up on the Youtube thingy and have accounts with their songs uploaded, so people can actually listen to their songs through artists official accounts, so what does it matter if it's another account uploading the song?
Again, and on Youtube it applies even more, it's a huge promotion tool for bands having songs on Youtube. I think you are very wrong Aleksi.

Listening to music via Youtube is basically the same as listening to music via TV or radio, so its just promotion.
Giving music away for free is letting people download it for free. And yes, you can download music from Youtube, but that's not the purpose of this site.

There's a difference between promoting your music and giving it all away for free.
My whole point was that bands don't lose ANYTHING on having their songs on Youtube, they only earn from it. I don't see how you can think that bands lose money from having songs on Youtube. Just because people listen to the songs, it doesn't make the bands lose money. Same thing with downloading..
When people download an album to check it out, you can't count it as one album loss for the band, cause the person would never have bought the album in the first place. People download albums to listen to them and tell if they like it, many people support it and buy the album aswell. And I think that this is probably why so many bands started streaming their whole albums 1-2 weeks before release nowadays, cause they understand that people want to listen to the whole album, not 2-3 songs of it.

Ok i'm gonna give my 2 cents in here seeing as i've done my fair share of this whole WMG/Copyright bullshit myself.

From what I have seen there are only certain songs you can use in videos. Songs like Slipknot's and basically evertyhing under WMG will be removed.
Go ahead, use Downfall as a soundtrack to your movie, but credit the band and tell which label it's from, in this case Spinefarm. Make it clearly visible.

You are using the song under the "Fair Use" segment of copyright laws. This means you are either using it for teaching, commenting and other non-profit reasons. WMG doesn't seem to give a crap so please don't use anything by them, you'll get your account shut down.

Here's a video of mine, where I've put together a compilation of my favourite video game music:

Look at the intro, I clearly state that I am non commercial and don't make any money from it. I also list the makers of the game and music composers when I can.

Bands/artists doesn't loose ANYTHING by having their stuff on Youtube, it simply does the opposite.

The thing that shocks me the most is this....the 16 year old from sweden actually thought it a good idea to post his request on the forums......where the fans go.......
