Charlie riding the lightning

The drum tracks for that song were pasted together, it was never recorded in one take... or two takes... it took a lot of takes, if you get the picture... but it WAS Lars who recorded them, just as he did on demo for that song as well (which is quite funny, btw).

The demo for that song has no double bass, as far as I know.

You know what? I think Lars kicks ass, and I think a lot of the people on this board probably thought so at one point too. If it weren't for his loud mouth and poorly tuned drums on the St. Anger album, I doubt you'd hear NEAR this level of crap. When the Black Album came out, everyone spoke his name with near god-like proportions. Not coincidentally, I think that album STILL has the best sounding drums ever put to record. I remember the first time I listed to Of Wolf and Man with my headphones on, and I thought my brain was being turned to jelly by weight of his drumming.

Is he "the best?" Probably not, but he sure as hell is distinctive, and has put down some of the best drum lines in the history of rock. If you can't at least accept that fact, then I can't help you.
Well said, man. The Black Album should be up there with Nevermind as one of the most influential records of the 90s.

But, after seeing the video of One from the Stones gig, watching him on the St. Anger rehearsals--he couldn't keep time. This is shameful. But, up until about 3 years ago I still thought he was a good drummer.

I recently downloaded 2 mp3's of Dyers Eve live. They sucked. Lars didn't do the double bass and honestly his playing took the song one step down, and James didn't sing very well. But that's another story.

I recently discovered somethign about the black album drums, along with about 75% of all recorded drums. most bands use what is called a drum replacer: specifically what is called an F-16. It takes the sound of whatever is mic'd, and replaces it with a better sound; a tom for a better sounding tom. The drummer is playing it, but its almost like playing an electric drum kit.

Lars achieved the maximum with a minimum of effort - that should be admired.

Well, I just listened to it once again and the double bass is there, as is Hetfield's hysterical "wah-nah-nah, wah-nah-nah" singing. I'd be willing to send you the MP3 just so you don't think I'm talking out of my ass.

Not in 1991, and that doesnt happen as often as you think. If they went to a kickass studio then the engineer knows how to get a badass drum sound without replacing the hits with samples in a program like Drumagog. And the Black Album drums were not replaced. Bob Rock is the king when it comes to badass drum sounds. The Black Album drum tracks, though, were spliced from thousands of takes, therefore...of course they are fucking perfect. Anyone could have had badass drum tracks like that had they taken months to record and edit together from an infinite number of takes like they did. There's not a chance in hell that Lars can actually play an entire song with that intensity and hitting that hard all the way through consistantly in a live setting though. I will say that it's easier to get perfect drum takes now than it was then though. Well, most drummers can ANYWAY, but with Lars, it's another story LOL But it'd be easier today than it was in 1991 because you can edit easily in Pro-Tools or any other software, where-as, back then they were splicing actual tape.

This very galaxy: The Milky way, circa 1991. There is this album that was recorded by a band called Metallica. It was all black and had a cool looking snake in the bottom right corner. You should check it out!

...I checked it out. I heard a rather bland, inspid hard rock / metal hybrid. You HAVE heard other drummers haven't you?

Blah blah blah fucking blah Jesus this is tired.

you know, for all the crap we give Lars, at least he has a unique style. But after the thrash style of the first three albums, he does seem a bit out of place. Load would have sounded better with a drummer like Stew Copeland of the Police. Lars' style just isn't suited for that type of sound.

Well actually I have, and if you read my previous post a little more carefully you'll that I never made any claim that he was THE GREATEST DRUMMER...IN ZEE WORLD!!!! (Think Ana Gasteyer doing Celine Dion on SNL.) I just said he has a unique style that worked very well in the band he's in, and that nearly everyone used to worship at his feet after the black ablum.

God this is tired. We need some new threads on this board bad.

I have always thought Lars was a bad drummer. WAY before stanger. The first time I heard Metallica, the first thing I noticed was a drummer who was no where near up to par with all the other thrash bands. And a drummers "Sound" on a kit has nothing to do with his ability to play well. Yeah, the drums on the black album had a nice tone, but there was still a half hearted drummer playing them.

He had a really unique style-a really good one then some how he reverted to a punk drummer
