well if you're going to do things bass ackwards in a way that professionals would never do it it's not very apropos to complain that a professional software package doesn't accommodate you. time-based effects on Aux Inputs, and bussed from each track you need some return from on Sends... that's how it's done. if you insist on doing it otherwise just process with AS plugs in multiple passes.
... and yet every single pro using PT (which is most of them) at the highest plateaus of the industry get by just fine and don't complain. if you really and truly need more than 5 inserts for a given track then it's time to go back to the drawing board with the original tones you recorded.... because there's a problem there somewhere. another way to assuage this "problem" is to use channel-strip type plugs that incorporate gating, compression, and EQ in one plug.... there are several good ones.
