Christmas Decorations – Model 91
Kranky krank053 October 21st 2002
By Russell Garwood

Christmas Decorations, an "ambient punk" duo, hail from Brooklyn NY, and released their debut "Model 91" through Kranky in October. Their music combines guitars and sequencers in minimalistic, incremental compositions, while drums and vocals play a lesser role in their overall sound. Most of the songs rely on stripped-down phrases, repetition and slow development, and hence have fairly loose structures. The vox, when present, are often effects-laden, yet prominent, and add variation to what could otherwise be a monotonous album.

Like much of Kranky’s roster, the harsh minimalism displayed on this release is an acquired taste and by no means accessible. However, if you look beneath the rough exterior you are likely to find a lot more content and feeling than is the impression upon first listening. "Model 91" comes highly recommended for fans of raw electronics, especially if they are after rock elements mixed in..
