Classics Reborn

Holy fuck balls I didn't need to be proven right, but my daughter just got this example as her subtraction work today

567 - 233 = 233
then expressed and long form subtraction they were told it's
500 - 200 = 200
60 - 30 = 30
7 - 3 = 3
answer = 233

Seriously? We'd just had a discussion about how much of a failure this home school shit has been because of the interaction and social aspect and the fucking school go and drop a sum like that on the kids?

I told my daughter to go ahead and answer every sum with a couple of random numbers in the equation somewhere as long as both "answers" were the same, even if they weren't correct. But she wouldn't do it.

It's a pity, but yeah.
My dad just told her that it's the reason the junior grades went back before the senior grades, the teachers are now getting the grade 2 classes to write the grade 6 subtraction sums. :)

I just got a message telling me Trooper beer is again available in Australia (didn't know it ever was). I'm not a huge beer drinker any more but I thought I'd check it out and see if it was worth buying as a taste test.
8 cans for $48.00
12 cans for $70.00
24 cans for $109.00
That's more than double what the average beer price is here, although on the upside the postage is cheaper than getting a t-shirt posted :)

The site looks dodgy (although it's not) because of typos and grammatical errors but apparently they use both local and US hops to make the beer to Bruce's recipe, that's part of the reason they've got it on local release at the moment, but the website's inaccuracies make it hard to read too much into the deal.
Same site is selling 24 cans of that Metallica beer at $80 (for 24) down from $155. The Metallica stuff is a different beer and would usually be a higher price but not that much more...and at $80 I still wouldn't buy it.

When I do drink beer I'm pretty much an Aussie bogan and only drink VB (Victoria Bitter). People here love to hate on VB but I've been drinking it since I was about 14 so I don't give a shit. The only imported beer I've ever really liked enough to have more than a few times is Heinekin. These days I'm generally only drinking Jack Daniels or the occasional rum though, but I'm lucky to have three drinks a week anyway.

Alcohol is pricey here anyway (our government is trying to save us from our selves by increasing alcohol taxes every 6 months). But imported stuff is insanely expensive and in general all those 'band' beers, whiskeys and wines only get imported by specialist shops not the general places that sell booze.

I'm still in shock lol. Forgetting that those are more than double what domestic is, I'm still shocked at what that is. I paid $12?, maybe a little more for a 4 pack of that Megadeth beer and I thought that was a lot!
Out of curiosity are you allowed to home brew there?

Yeah we can brew but I have no idea of the cost. We used to make our own whiskey and rum for about $5 a bottle, but once the government realised they could tax smokes and booze and people would just accept it they haven't looked back.

About 10 years ago the government dropped what got call the 'alcopop' tax which was supposed to tax those mixed cans and bottles that were becoming insanely popular at clubs and pubs. Punters just wanted to get pissed and clubs would charge for $8 a can of Jack and cola (or whatever else) so the government decided to save us from drunks in pubs causing violence in the street taxing by the alcohol content would work.
Beer went up, wine went up but of course spirits skyrocked.

Over the past 30 years we went from paying about $20 for a 24 pack of beer to about $30, then because the tax was increased yearly it's gone up and up and now most 24 packs are around $40 if the are domestically produced. Spirits did the same, they jumped from about $20 for a bottle of Jack to around $40 and it's all in the name of keeping us healthy yet people are still dying on a daily basis of alcohol related illnesses and worst of all alcohol infused violence.

This is one of the not so obvious costs of our "free for all health care" that money has to come from somewhere so taxing and taxing and then taxing some more for alcohol and cigarettes is part of that. The government can't afford people to give up their vices because the tax they get from it is keeping them alive.
