The part with the harmonics... 7th and 5th fret...

---------77-55-------
------77-------55----
---77-----------55---
-77--------------55--
-----------------------
-----------------------

...How the hell do you pick that cleanly??? I mean, there's not even a technique it should theoretically work with... This has been bothering me for some time.

you might try what i do, which is rearrange it a little bit to suit an economy picking pattern. here are two ways I do it:

---------------7-5-------------
---------7-7-7----5-5-5--------
-------7----------------5------
-7-7-7-------------------5-5-5-

the picking pattern for that would be: d-u-d-d-d-u-d-d-u-u-d-u-u-u-d-u

or I might try it like this:

---------------7-5-------------
---------7-7-7----5-5-5--------
---7-7-7----------------5-5-5--
-7----------------------------5-

with the picking pattern: d-d-u-d-d-u-d-d-u-u-d-u-u-d-u-u

There are several ways you could manipulate that, and it's a fast enough lick to where doing it with this approach isn't going to sound too different from the original. I actually perceive that lick as more of an effect personally, and this method gives the same effect to my ears.
