Irgendwie hielten sich meine Erwartungen bzgl. des Interviews mit Alexi Laiho von CHILDREN OF BODOM ziemlich in Grenzen. Der Ruf eines maulfaulen Finnen eilte dem Sänger und Gitarristen ja schon eine Weile voraus und ich machte mich eigentlich darauf gefaßt, endlich mal einen richtigen Unsympath interviewen zu dürfen. Doch meine Glückssträhne scheint anzuhalten, auch Alexi Laiho machte dieses Interview zu einer äußerst angenehmen Erfahrung! Doch lest selbst....
Als erstes interessiert mich mal, wie die Band CHILDREN OF BODOM nach dem sehr beachtlichen Erfolg des ersten Albums Something Wild so mit der Situation klargekommen ist.
Es war zunächst natürlich ein großer Schock für alle, da wir sowas überhaupt nicht erwartet haben. Wir meinten eigentlich, daß niemand das Album wirklich mögen würde, da es den verschiedenen Fangruppen vielleicht zu sehr in die jeweils andere Richtung ging. Natürlich hat es jeden gefreut, daß es so gut lief! Ich bin absolut zufrieden mit den Verkaufszahlen, die so um die 20.000 weltweit liegen. Ich wäre zufrieden gewesen, wenn sich das Album 1.000 mal verkauft hätte!
Würdest du sagen, daß der Erfolg die Band in irgend einer Weise verändert hat?
Ich denke nur in einer positiven Weise! Keiner von uns ist zu einem Rockstar oder sowas geworden. Wir sind noch dieselben Jungs! Der Erfolg ist niemandem zu Kopf gestiegen. Wir hatten die Möglichkeit zu touren und eine Menge Gigs zu spielen. Und auch, viele Leute zu treffen. Wir sind dadurch auch erfahrener geworden, wenn es zum Live-Auftritte geht. Also wirklich nur auf eine gute Art!
Inwiefern denkst du, ist euer Label für den Erfolg verantwortlich?
Sie hatten natürlich einiges damit zu tun, da die Promotion ziemlich gut war! Spinefarm haben eine klasse Arbeit geliefert in Finnland. Und Nuclear Blast natürlich in Deutschland und Europa. Promotion ist natürlich eine sehr wichtige Sache, besonders wenn es das erste Album einer Band ist.
Ist es für die Bandmitglieder denn nun momentan möglich, von der Musik zu leben?
Oh, in gewisser Weise, ha!
Arbeitest du denn inzwischen oder lebst du noch bei deinen Eltern?
Nein, ich arbeite nicht und wohne noch bei meinen Eltern. Um allein von der Musik zu leben braucht es schon noch etwas mehr als ein gut verkauftes erstes Album. Aber es ist sicher mein Ziel, von der Musik leben zu können.
Was uns natürlich zum zweiten Album bringt. Für mich hört sich das neue Material zu dem vom Debüt sehr ähnlich an. Ich erwartete eigentlich, daß die Band einen Schritt weiter gehen würde, aber ich denke, ihr habt eher am Fine-Tuning im Songwriting und in der Produktion gearbeitet.
Ich finde nicht, daß es total gleich ist! Es gibt schon einige Unterschiede zwischen den Alben. Vielleicht ist die Bottom-Line dieselbe, aber es gibt schon viele Unterschiede. Speziell der gesamte Sound. Ich denke nicht, daß es noch dieser Death Metal ist.
Nun, das erste Album war ja eigentlich auch kein Death Metal, oder?
Ja, ich meine auch eher den Sound! Ich glaube auch, daß die Songs einfach besser sind und griffiger. Vielleicht auch melodischer, aber genauso aggressiver.
Die Songs, wie sie auf dem Album sind konnte eigentlich jeder erwarten, ich hätte mir da einfach ein paar mehr Überraschungen gewünscht.
Ich weiß, was du meinst, aber die Songs entstanden einfach sehr natürlich. Wir wollten keine spektakulären Veränderungen! Wenn es natürlich passiert wäre, hätten wir die Veränderungen genauso mit aufgenommen. Wir sind nicht die Art von Band, die einfach alles über den Haufen wirft, nur um der Veränderung Willen. Vielleicht wird das nächste Album ja ganz anders. Okay, die neuen Songs sind vielleicht wirklich ähnlich, aber einfach viel besser gemacht, besser gespielt und besser produziert.
Ebenfalls sehr ähnlich zum ersten Album ist das Coverartwork von Hatebreeder. Könnte da ein Konzept dahinter stecken?
Ja, das war unsere Absicht! Das ganze Konzept geht um diese Grim Reaper Geschichte. Für mich ist der Grim Reaper wie ein Symbol für Heavy Metal und das paßt auch wirklich gut. Ich mag es auch, so eine Figur oder einen Charakter zu haben, wie z.B. Eddie von Iron Maiden.
Besitzt euer Grim Reaper denn dann auch einen netten kleinen Namen?
Wir müssen ihm mal noch einen geben. Viele Bands haben so einen Charakter und ich finde das einfach cool.
Gibt es denn dann auch eine Geschichte zu eurem Charakter oder ist es nur ein Symbol für die Band?
Es ist einfach ein Symbol für die Band, da es sehr gut zum Bandnamen paßt, zur Musik usw.
Okay, zurück zur Musik! Für mich hat Hatebreeder die größten Momente, wenn es einfach rockt, in metallischer Hinsicht. Wie z.B. beim Titelsong gegen Ende. Was hat euch hierbei beeinflußt?
Ich mag alten Metal. Ich wollte einfach eine Kombination aus modernem Metal Sound wie Black Metal und Sachen wie OZZY OSBOURNE. Ich liebe seine Musik. Ja, OZZY OSBOURNE, W.A.S.P., TWISTED SISTER, die rockigen Sachen. Ich habe viele Einflüsse, auch von Power Metal Bands wie JUDAS PRIEST und MANOWAR z.B., die ich sehr mag!
Wie sieht es denn mit Side-Projects in der Band momentan aus. Bist du da noch der einzige, oder haben auch andere Bandmitglieder ein paar Sachen am laufen?
Nein, nur ich spiele bei SINERGY. Und dann noch bei IMPALED NAZARENE. Aber das sind eigentlich nicht meine Bands, keine Side-Projects. Wenn ich etwas anderes machen will, also auch andere Sachen schreiben und so, würde ich eine andere Band gründen.
Also sind die anderen Bands eher eine Art mit Musik experimentieren?
Ja, exakt. Ich spiele gerne verschiedene Arten von Metal, was IMPALED NAZARENE und CHILDREN OF BODOM ja absolut sind. Und natürlich kann man da auch übers Geld reden, um so mehr ich arbeite, um so mehr Geld bekomme ich. Selbstverständlich mache ich das nicht nur, um Geld zu bekommen! Ich habe damit angefangen, weil ich Musik wirklich liebe. Aber da es jetzt zu meinem Job wurde, muß ich damit natürlich auch Geld verdienen.
Okay...da wir gerade von anderen Bands reden...wie sehen deine Kontakte zur finnischen Metal-Szene aus, die ja zur Zeit sehr erfolgreich ist. Es gibt auch sehr viele verschiedene Bands, wie z.B. euch, Sentenced, Apocalyptica usw.
Ja, jeder kennt hier den anderen. Ich kenne die STRATOVARIOUS-Jungs, die absolut cool sind und absolut keine Rockstars oder AMORPHIS und natürlich IMPALED NAZARENE.
Konkurrenzdenken?
(zögerlich) Nein...
Hört sich aber nicht überzeugend an...
Du meinst wie ein Wettbewerb unter den Bands? Nein, wir haben keinen speziellen Sound, wie z.B. den Göteborg-Sound. Jeder in Finnland klingt anders. Wenn du CHILDREN OF BODOM und SENTENCED vergleichst, ist das ganz was anderes. Und die Bands, die wie andere klingen, sind einfach nicht so groß. Also keine Konkurrenz!
Wie sieht es denn mit deinem alten Statement aus, daß du die Menschheit haßt?
Ich glaube, viele Leute haben mich in der Beziehung mißverstanden! Viele Leute haben mich gefragt, warum ich Menschen hasse. Ich bin kein Freak, der Leute auf der Straße umbringt! Ich bin Menschen gegenüber sehr skeptisch. Ich hab mit vielen Leuten schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht und es geht einfach darum, daß wenn ich jemanden treffe ich ihm nicht sofort vertrauen kann, bevor ich ihn kenne oder ihn gleich cool finden.
Für mich hat sich das auch ziemlich widersprüchlich angehört, da Musik doch genauso eine Art von Kommunikation ist.
Yeah, ich möchte selbstverständlich mit Leuten über meine Musik in Berührung kommen! Aber nicht so, daß ich mit den Leuten gleich abhängen möchte oder so. Ich möchte mit meinen Fans schon einen engen Kontakt haben.
Ich bin auch etwas überrascht, da dir als Interviewpartner ja ein recht schlechter Ruf voraus geht. Ich dachte eigentlich, unser Interview wäre ziemlich schnell erledigt
. Hast du dich in der Beziehung irgendwie verändert?
Haha, meine Promoter von Nuclear Blast waren da etwas angepisst von mir, da ich nicht viel geredet habe. Ich weiß nicht, es ist jetzt ganz anders, da wir ein zweites Album haben und ich einfach viel mehr zu erzählen habe. Als ich für das erste Album Interviews machen sollte, hatte ich einfach nicht viel zu erzählen! Ich möchte ja auch keinen Bullshit bringen.
Ich denke auch, daß Musiker sowas auch ihren Fans irgendwo schuldig sind.
Ja, exakt, vollkommen richtig!
Was glaubst du überhaupt, was du deinen Fans schuldig bist?
Ich mag Musik, die den Menschen Gefühle vermittelt und die Gefühle ausdrückt. Für mich war es immer so, daß die Musik der beste Weg war, Depression und Wut und solche Sachen zu vermitteln. Natürlich habe ich viele Dinge gemacht, um meine Gefühle auszudrücken, aber Musik hat sich als der beste Weg herauskristallisiert. Besser als irgendwie Schaden anzurichten. Ich denke, vielen Metal-Fans bringt es was, so mit negativen Gefühlen umzugehen.
Na gut, kommen wir mal wieder langsam zum Schluß....wie sieht es mit den 3 Alben aus, die du dir zuletzt angeschafft hast?
Uhm...nun das ist schwer, die Alben, die ich mir zur Zeit anhöre sind Bark at the Moon, No Rest for the Wicked und The Ultimate Sin von OZZY.
Wie sieht es mit deiner Meinung zum Internet, Bandhomepages und CD-Roms aus?
Ich denke, das ist echt großartig! Ich benutze das Internet selbst nicht, da ich mit Computer nicht so sehr viel anfangen kann. Ich denke aber, daß es eine gute Sache ist um Informationen zu verbreiten. Es ist für die Leute einfacher, an Informationen heranzukommen, anstatt rumrennen zu müssen und sich Magazine zu suchen. Speziell dem Musik-Business bringt das Internet sicher viel. Mit Email und so weiter ist es sicher auch einfacher, mit einer Band in Kontakt zu kommen.
Wie sieht es denn mit herausragenden Live-Erlebnissen aus?
Es gab sehr viele schlecht Dinge, die mir live passiert sind, haha. Ein gutes Live-Erlebnis ist meiner Meinung nach keine Frage von der Menge der Zuschauer. Ich spiele lieber für 50 Leute die voll in der Musik drin sind und ausflippen als vor 800 Leuten, die einfach nur zuhören. Ich weiß nicht, das größte Gefühl ist sicher, wenn man von den Leuten eine gute Resonanz bekommt. Ich hatte aber eigentlich nur ein wirklich schlechtes Erlebnis, das war 1997, ein paar Monate, nachdem unser erstes Album raus kam. Es war wohl unser sechster Gig mit CHILDREN OF BODOM überhaupt. Wir hatten nicht viel Erfahrung, und alles lief schief. Meine Saiten sind dreimal gerissen oder so, ich mußte die Gitarre wechseln, das Tuning stimmte nicht mehr und bei Warrior spielte Alexander statt mit der Verzerrung mit dem klaren Sound das Hauptriff. Er wollte den Verzerrer reparieren, hat es aber nicht hingekriegt. Ich flippte absolut aus, ich wollte einfach nur heim, haha. Ich dachte nur Scheiße, raus hier! Sowas macht mir aber heute nicht mehr viel aus! Ich geb meine Gitarre weiter, laß mir eine neue Saite draufmachen und singe halt. Oder bei einem Gig vor kurzem schnitt ich mir am Bass von Henkka irgendwie die Stirn auf und es tat weh wie Hölle. Aber es machte nichts, da das Publikum so super war und es war mir einfach egal.
Wie sieht es mit einer echten Persönlichkeit aus? Wen würdest du gerne mal in deinem Leben treffen, was würdest du die Person gern fragen?
Oh, da gibt es einige, in erster Linie Gitarristen. Ich würde gerne Randy Rhoads treffen! Jake E. Lee und Zakk Wylde natürlich. Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai. Ich weiß nicht, was ich sie fragen würde, das würde ich dann rausfinden, wenn ich sie treffen würde, haha.
In der kleinen Abschlußplauderei erzählte mir Alexi noch, daß ich mit meinem Interview Glück gehabt hätte, da er vor ein paar Wochen täglich mehrere Interviews geben mußte und da nicht ganz so gut drauf war. Auch die Tatsache, daß wir am abend noch AMORPHIS treffen würde, freute ihn sehr und er ließ Grüße ausrichten. So weit kann es mit der Menschenfeindlichkeit also echt nicht sein und auch wenn sich meine Euphorie für das neue Album in Grenzen hält, hat der Name CHILDREN OF BODOM für mich einen ganz neuen Sympathiestellenwert eingenommen.

As the first times I'm interested in how the band Children of Bodom after the very considerable success of the first album, Something Wild 'as the situation clearly has come.

It was of course a great shock for everybody, because something we did not expect. We really thought that nobody really like the album would be different because the fan perhaps too much in the other direction went. Of course, it all pleased that it ran so good! I am absolutely satisfied with the sales figures, so are 20,000 worldwide. I would have been happy if the album had sold 1,000 times!
Would you say that the success of the band in any way changed?
I think only in a positive way! None of us has become a rock star or something has become. We are still the same guys! The success is no one to head risen. We had the opportunity to be tours and a lot of gigs to play. And also, many people to meet. We are therefore also become experienced when it goes live performances. So really only a good way!
To what extent do you think is your label for success?
They obviously had a lot to do, because the promotion was pretty good! Spinefarm have a great work delivered in Finland. And of course Nuclear Blast in Germany and Europe. Promotion is obviously a very important thing, especially if it's the first album of a band.
Is it because the band members now currently possible, from music to live?
Oh, in some ways, ha!
Are you working now or because you still live with your parents?
No, I do not work and still live with my parents. To solely by the music needs to live it a little more than a good first album sold. But it is certainly my goal, from music to be able to live.
As far as we are of course for the second album brings. For me to hear the new material on the debut of very similar to. I actually expected that the band go a step further, but I think you have more on fine-tuning in songwriting and production work.
I do not think it is totally the same! There are some differences between the albums. Perhaps the same bottom-line, but there are many differences. Especially the whole sound. I do not think there is still this is Death Metal.
Well, the first album was actually no Death Metal, right?
Yes, I also prefer the sound! I also believe that the songs are simply better and manageable. Perhaps even melodic, but equally aggressive.
The songs, as they are on the album could really expect any, since I had just a few more surprises desired.
I know what you mean, but the songs were just very natural. We wanted no spectacular changes! If it obviously would have happened if we had the same changes included. We are not the kind of band that just pile everything on the raises, only to change the will. Perhaps the next album is quite different. Okay, the new songs are probably really similar, but simply much better done, played better and better produced.
Also very similar to the first album is the cover artwork of Hatebreeder. Might as a concept behind?
Yes, that was our intention! The whole concept is about this story Grim Reaper. For me, the Grim Reaper as a symbol for heavy metal and fits really well. I like it, so a character or a character, such as Eddie from Iron Maiden.
Does your Grim Reaper since then also a nice little name?
We need him to another times. Many bands have such a character and I think this is just cool.

I like old metal. I wanted simply a combination of modern metal sound like Black Metal and stuff like Ozzy Osbourne. I love his music. Yes, Ozzy Osbourne, WASP, TWISTED SISTER, rocking the property. I have many influences, including power metal bands like Judas Priest and Manowar, for example, which I very much!
What about Side-Projects in the band from now. Are you still the only, or also have other band members a few things on the run?
No, only when I play SINERGY. And then when Impaled Nazarene. But these are not really my bands, no side-Projects. If I want to do something else, including other things to write and so, I would start another band.
So are the other bands rather a way of experimenting with music '?
Yes, exactly. I like playing different kinds of metal, which Impaled Nazarene and Children of Bodom are absolutely yes. And of course, since you can also talk about money, the more I work, the more money I get. Obviously I do not just to raise money to get! I've started to adapt because I really love music. You mean like a competition among the bands? No, we do not have a specific sound, such as the Gothenburg sound. Each sounds different in Finland. If you CHILDREN OF BODOM and Sentenced compare, is quite something else. And the bands that sound like others, are simply not that big. So no competition!
What about your old statement that you hate humanity?
I think many people have asked me in the relationship misunderstood! Many people have asked me why I hate people. I'm not a freak, the people on the street kills! I'm very skeptical person. I have bad experiences with many people and it is simply a matter that if I meet someone I can not trust immediately, before I know him or find him equally cool.
For me, the fairly even contradictory listened as music but as a kind of communication.
Yeah, I would obviously with people about my music coming into! But not that I do with the people depend wants equal or so. I want my fans already have a close contact.
I am also a bit surprised, because as you interview a fairly even worse reputation precedes. I thought our interview would be done fairly quickly
. Have you in the relationship somehow changed?
Haha, my promoter of Nuclear Blast were angepisst something from me, because I did not talk much. I do not know, it is now quite different, because we have a second album and I would simply rather have to tell. When I first album for the interviews should make, I had simply not much to tell! I would also bring no bullshit.
I also think that musicians and their fans something somewhere are guilty.
Yes, exactly, perfectly right!
What do you think about what you've been your fans?
I like music that conveys the human feelings and the feelings expressed. For me it was always so that the music was the best way, depression and anger and such things to convey. Of course I have done many things to express my feelings, but music has proved to be the best way out. Somehow better than damage. I think many metal fans what it brings, as with negative feelings deal.
Well, we once again slowly at the end .... what of the 3 albums from the last you've purchased?
Uhm ... now it is difficult to identify the albums that I am currently listening to: "Bark at the Moon "," No Rest for the Wicked "and" The Ultimate Sin 'by Ozzy.
What are your thoughts on Internet homepages tape and CD-ROMs from?
I think this is really great! I use the Internet itself, since I use computers only so much can begin. But I think that it is a good thing to disseminate information. It is easier for people to information availability, rather than to have to rumrennen and magazines looking for. Especially the music business brings the Internet safe lot. With e-mail and so forth, it is certainly easier, with a band to come into contact.
What does it with outstanding experiences from live?
There were a lot of bad things that happened to me live, haha. A good live experience, I believe, is not a question of the crowd of spectators. I prefer to play for the full 50 people in the music and freak out there than 800 people, just listen. I do not know the greatest feeling is safe if one of the people gets a good response. I had actually just a really bad experience, that was 1997, a few months after our first album came out. It was probably our sixth gig with Children of Bodom ever. We have not had much experience, and everything went wrong. My strings are torn three times or so, I had to change the guitar, the tuning and agreed not to, Warrior 'Alexander played instead with the distortion with the clear sound the Hauptriff. He wanted to fix the distortion, but it has not hingekriegt. I absolutely went crazy, I just wanted to go home, haha. I just thought, shit, get out here! 'Gives me something today, but not much more! I give 'my guitar on, let me a new string and make it sing again. Or at a gig recently, I cut myself on the bass of Henkka somehow on the forehead and it did hurt like hell. But it did nothing, because the audience was so great and it was simply does not matter to me.
What does it with a real personality? Whom would you be happy times in your life meet, what would you like to ask the person?
Oh, there are some, primarily guitarists. I would like to meet Randy Rhoads! Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde of course. Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai. I do not know what I would ask them, which I would then find out if I would take it, haha.
In the small final chat Alexi told me yet that I interview with my luck would have it a few weeks ago several daily give interviews and had it not quite so good it was.
