ok, in the song Satch Boogie, at about 00:32 in the song he does this outrageously high pitched harmonic. HOW? does he raise the trem bar so that he is essentially pulling on the strings, or is it some other trick i am not familair with. Alexi does it a lot too. please help me out on this.

but when you pull the bar and put more tension on the strings, wont the strings break?

ok ill take your word for it.

but if i break a string..... you owe me for it.

haha not really

oh one other thing, does the type of Floyd rose you have affect the outcome as well. Meaning, will an original FR work better then a licensed FR. I have an RX10D with a Licensed Floyd Rose.

some will argue back and forth, as most always will , but the Original Floyd is probably the best, in my opinion , in terms of stability, and build quality. Most of the knock off floyds are made with the same principles, but are constructed purely from pot metal, or weak and left over stuff. The higher quality ones give you better tone, etc etc etc.
1. OFR
2. Schaller made floyd *watch out for the intonation baseplate, as its easy to strip the metal if you dont have long enough screws*

you can use pinch harmonics to get some sounds like that but natural harmonics are best. the 5th and 7th frets right on the fret are loudest. You can also get sound out of the 3rd 15th 17th and more. For an easy one like on bed of razors at :22 seconds just put your finger above the 15th fret on the g string if im not mistaken and pull up on your bar.

Mmh if it's the word pinch harmonic that you don't understand, I can try to explain it : It took me some time to understand, but I think now I got it, you pink the string as usual, but then you slightly brush it with the side of your thumb, it will create a new "resonance knot" on the string, which will result in the harmonic (because the frequency is twice the normal one or something like that). I guess the advantage of artificial harmonic is that it's created with the thumb instead of the left hand, which I think enables you to bend it (like the beautiful ones in Kissing the Shadows at 0'04" and 0'10")
But you can't bruch anywhere, you have to find the right place, something like the fret + 24 frets, so you'll often have to search for something like the 28th or 30th fret.
Well, if all I just said is wrong, sorry !^^ and please someone corrects me^^

Um, I'm not sure of what I say, so can we bend artificial harmonics or not ? Cuz' harmonics look to be something special, and maybe a bend would change the resonance frequency or whatever and stop the harmonic...

Its simple, you hit an artificial harmonics on any open string (Satch does it one either H or G), rappidly pull the bar down, and slowly raise it up, the sound starts becoming something like an airoplane jet sound or some laser beam, dunno, its quite simple :D

Now could somebody please translate this into a language understandable to somebody who has got no idea of tecnical terams and is not a native English speaker? :(
pinch harmonic = artifical harmonic

that help? :)

I musta Missed the H string, is that some special tuning?

whaat? H string?? ???

anyways, My favorites are probably the 2nd and 3rd fret harmonics on the low E string and a 4th and 6th fret harmonic on the G string. You gotta vibrato then fuck out of them too for maximum effect. high volume, high distortion, boost mids around 1-2 khz...and you have killer harmonics!! but i have one problem i cant pick them all the time...I do it like plucking the string with the plectrum and the thumb at the same time...any better options?

The H -string= B -string. :)
In Europe we use the letter h for the note 'b' although many people use the both letters because the internet has mixed up these terms quite a much.

And what comes for the original question: BodomiC got it quite a right. Just remember to use your left hand for the bar and right hand for muting the extra strings+picking the pinch harmonic. Try searching and downloading some Satch live vid's to see for better(Surfing With The Alien, Satch Boogie etc..). He talked about the whammy screams in some guitar magazine a while ago. Can't remember what magazine that was(sorry :( ). I hope you got the idea even for a bit.

Mmh, now I don't understand :p
YOu pull up the bar with the left hand ? Is that possible ? I've already seen the satch boogie live movie in which he pushes the bar down (or towards himself) with the left hand, but when you push it towards the crowd, you can do it with the left hand ? I don't know, it looks strange to me... (but I'm just a beginner so...)

Sure but you'll need a Floyd Rose bridge(or similar) to do the trick. Those tradiotional stratocaster tremolo bars won't go "towards the crowd" enough to do this. With a Floyd Rose there is no problem moving the bar up or down(no matter what hand you use :) ).

Thank you all. I did it the other day. I love the sound of it, and will use it in future songs of mine. one thing I saw at G3 was Steve Vai hold his guitar up just by holding his trem bar. Do you need heavier strings to do this. It just looks bad ass.
