Is there a place for this?

Being of a Bad News/Spinal Tap vintage.....I appreciate them as a throwaway piece but never viewed them as "proper" bands :)

Maybe I'm not the best person to voice an opinion being one of the most laid back, chilled out and genuinely least excitable people on the planet :)

I think there's a place for it, but I'm becoming less and less interested in Bands that only or nearly only do Comedy. And I hate Steel Panther.

I think if a Band does Comedy in some songs but not all or most it is fine. For example, Edguy have some good humour in their Music from time to time and 'Lavatory Love Machine' is an example of a comedy song that is so good that I never get bored of it (providing I don't listen to it on repeat for hours on end!).

Not for me... only in small doses, like Edguy's earlier stuff, but straight-up parody bands like Steel Panther etc. do nothing for me. I don't like comedy in my music - in fact I'm the opposite, I prefer more drama.

What do you more exactly mean? Bands like System of a Down...? For me I can accept them but otherwise I'm only for a really small dose of it... If I want comedy I'll find a good movie.

Comedy and music go way back, novelty songs are long established, tongue-in-cheek and metal (ESPECIALLY power metal) go very much hand in hand. I don't begrudge comedy in metal, I expect it. It's not always for me and it gets too much very quickly and it's never really made me actually laugh, mildly amused maybe. The trouble comes when you base your whole schtick around it because then you're pigeonholed, one track and have a very short shelf life with your audience (Steel Panther, Grailknights, Nanowar, Gwar etc). That said I think some bands who started as comedic (Alestorm, Dethklok, Gloryhammer) can actually kick out some worthy music and it can be a nice change of pace when you're established bands don't take themselves seriously and have a bit of fun (Edguy, Sonata, Helloween, etc).

So yeah basically what everyone's already said
