Most important thing I feel is (besides pro singer in a good room) is not so much as having a good mic and pre but more a case of the right mic and pre.

Vocalist moving around too much either approaching the mic or facing somewhere else between takes or even in the same take.
Room reflections.
Pitch and tightness.
Compressing too hard on the way in.

There's some cheaper stuff out there that show aliasing especially in the highs pretty bad.
Against dark backgrounds or a dark track...
Can you tuck the vocals back a bit and make sure the snare is still up?. No .. maybe
