Computer Issue

Ok, so, my computer (a Dell Inspiron something something running windows xp) is doing this new thing where it won't read discs, and then when I shut it down, it won't boot back up. It just stops on the black screen with "DELL" across is, so I can't actually DO anything. It's happened twice so far. The first time, it wouldn't start for several hours. Then it happened again last Saturday and didn't start back up until today.

So, uh, what the fuck? Obviously I know very, very little about these fucking things, so sorry if I'm being too vague.

I think Ozz is right (for once). Sounds like a battery or power adapter problem or something wrong with your motherboard. Unless I could be there to dick around with it, your best option is to call Dell.

Thanks guys. I'll have it looked at on Monday, but it's a little comforting to know it's probably not a virus or something fucked up like that.

Am I right to think that- assuming it is, in fact, a power issue- it could be fixed without having to lose all my shit? I really don't have anything that important on here, but that would still be annoying.

You should probably call a local computer repair dude to take a look at the mobo and power supply.

I would just go get a flash drive big enough to hold all the shit you don't want to have to install again or whatever.

Rick: Fuck you

Nah you won't lose anything on your hard drive if it's just a power issue. Just hope there isn't a problem with your hard drive because that's what your computer boots off of and not your motherboard. But I assume it runs just fine when it does indeed boot up ya?

Rick: Fuck you

I have a somewhat similar problem with my laptop. It will boot up once out of every ten or so tries, work for about 30 minutes, lock up, and crash. It's not a virus, I managed to reformat it when it started this shit, but I can't get it to not lock up. I know it's not my RAM or power source... but fuck if I know where to go from here, other than a shop, and I'm too broke for that shit atm.

I remember back a couple years ago, something kinda similar with my comp occured. It was because the harddrive failed. Luckily my comp was still under warranty though.

Well that just sucks... I'm going to take it to the shop when I get the moolah. Mine's not under warranty anymore, and when it was I sent it in and they said "water damage" and basically told me to fuck off. They completely ripped me off.

It's possible it's because you have vista. I replaced my vista with XP when I had a similair problem. That did it. There's a lot of issues with vista. Also, like Voss said, it's quite possible it's your hard drive. You may get lucky and it's a cheap easy fix. And honestly there's numerous problems that could be there. I wasn't kidding about an apple, but I realize that's not a plausible scenario based on money. Let me ask a friend of mine and I'll get back to you in a little bit.

Checked em and replied. I prefer Vista to XP and I doubt that it's Vista that causes this, because sometimes it doesn't even boot to the BIOS, and if it can't get to the BIOS it's not the OS. It might be a cheap easy fix but fuck if I know how to fix it. In one of my lucky moments with it I had the BIOS do a hard drive check and it checked out fine, said there were no problems, so I'm at a fucking loss.
