Generally, I ignore pop lyrics unless I expect to be amused by them. Very few of these guys are good writers, and why would they be? They're musicians. I wouldn't particularly want to hear a band made up of famous writers either (actually Stephen King, Amy Tan, Dave Berry and some others did have a band, and from what I heard they sucked ass).
The only exception is an amazing jazz-core band called NOMEANSNO who write good and occasionally brilliant lyrics. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, I rate either them or Opeth as the best band in the world (not just for their lyrics).
