This got me thinking: The essence of Symphony X live, captured in one shot: having fun :Spin:

I don't think a band needs to move around constantly to deliver a good show, though. Symphony X does an awesome job...and not just Russ, either. Romeo always cracks smiles, and he truly looks like he's enjoying himself. Lepond grooves away and flashes half smirks / half smiles at the crowd (it's almost as if he's saying in his head "Yo, I'm from Jersey!"). I don't see much of Jason or P's face, but I'm sure they're enjoying themselves, too.

Personally, I think a smile and the occasional banter with the audience is really all it takes to show interest. And that's not much to do, really. Even just the smile is enough.

Watching bands that don't do this CAN be boring. While I love their music, try watching Pink Floyd's video PULSE...the guitarist (whom unfortunately the camera focuses on most of the time) is hardly animated at all. The session musicians are more animated and expressive than the band most of the time (with the exception of the keyboardist...but he barely gets any camera time).

I love the Jersey comment. I moved away years ago and I KNOW I carried away a LOT of mannerisms from that place...

That definitely isn't a flattering shot of Russ (second picture posted). He looks like his face is about to explode! His eyes are bulging out and his tongue is sticking out too.

Personally, I think whoever took the picture caught him by surprise.

Russ is a clown on stage. One show when Romeo was into an intricate solo and concentrating, Russ was behind him throwing himself against the back wall, then he would turn around, roll his eyes and do it again like he was trying to make himself stick. Romeo went into a laughing fit when he finally saw what he was doing.

yeah the show meedley's talkin about was great. glenside PA on their tour with Queensryche last year. in the middle of wicked Russ did his vocal solo, then stopped and said "I SAAAID ... she SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAID! ... I SAAAAAAAAAID ... SHE SSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDD!" and then he was talkin to some guy in the audience, all we heard was russ saying "uh, did you just say i was hot? ... i thought we played in LA last week and then he did the vocal solo again and then back into the song, ah it was great.

As I've said on many occasions: I am by no means an SX fangirl - but I immensely enjoy seeing them live. Yeah, Russ has the performer streak, but everyone participates in the silliness (as much as they can, whatwith their hands being occupied!), which makes it fun to watch as well as listen.
